About Suzanne

I love helping kids learn how to master skills that develop their individual wisdom. In addition to the two years I spent as a K-12 substitute teacher, I worked with over 6,000 K-8 students across the state of Michigan as an Outreach Educator. From city schools in Flint and Detroit to suburban development centers and rural academies, my travels afforded me the opportunity to work with a wide range of student populations.

Also, while living in the Western U.S., I had the opportunity to create and teach Poetry & Writing Workshops inside a state prison system. I was the first professional writer to be invited by the Director of Cultural Affairs to teach inside that system, and I am very proud to have mentored dozens of student-inmates over the eight years I headed that project.

For 10.5 years, I served as contributing editor for a respected electronic journal (registered with the Library of Congress as an online periodical) through which I mentored over 100 writers. I am a published writer, poet, and poetry book editor, with professional listings in the Directory of American Poets (through Poets & Writers magazine) and the National Directory of Editors & Writers. My biographical listing is included in Who's Who of American Women, as an Independent Journalist / Poet / Artist.

I enjoy working with both children and adults. Please contact me, so we can develop an immediate plan of action that will help your child succeed to the best of his or her abilities. Adult students are welcome to contact me, as well!

Reading

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I am a published writer, poet, and poetry book editor, with a professional listing in the Directory of American Poets (through Poets & Writers magazine). While living in the Western U.S., I worked as a librarian for 2.5 years while attending classes at that state's Library Institute. I have a personal reading library of over 1,000 books, and I maintain a robust interest in literature of all kinds.

Reading

As a substitute teacher, I coached hundreds of students through reading assignments. I have also worked with adults at the community level. Through patience, and by sometimes getting creative during practice sessions, I have helped students build and sharpen their reading skills. I am never afraid to think outside the box when helping a student learn to enjoy reading!

Writing

For 10.5 years, I served as contributing editor for a respected electronic journal (registered with the Library of Congress as an online periodical) through which I mentored over 100 writers. Before that, I spent twenty years as a freelance journalist for numerous publications. I hold a professional listing in the National Directory of Editors & Writers, and my biographical listing is included in Who's Who of American Women as an Independent Journalist / Poet / Artist.
