About Kim

I have had a variety of experiences with youth throughout my career. I have run recreation programs, run and worked in after school programs, worked with special needs children in a summer day camp setting, and have been a substitute teacher. The fact is I love working with kids and get a great deal of satisfaction helping them to overcome any obstacles that present themselves. I grew up with undiagnosed ADD, so I know how it feels to not be able to focus or just not "get it". I spend much of my free time writing as a tool to conquer my own struggle with ADD, from poetry to songs that may or may not ever be heard by anyone else. I have a teaching degree, but have found that my calling is more about helping struggling students. I feel like I have a better understanding because I have been in their shoes. Let me help your child overcome the odds by sharing my own examples and having a great time learning together. I have had a variety of experiences with youth throughout my career. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I grew up with undiagnosed ADD. As a child I did so well with teachers who made learning fun and never boring, otherwise I was staring out the window or whistling in my own head always trying to entertain myself so I didn't get in trouble. By the time I made it to college (still undiagnosed) I had a very specific way of learning that I had created for myself along the way. The main problem was how to get good grades in subjects that I really wasn't interested in. So, I recreated my learning style, focusing on the ways that I most enjoyed learning. Your child's way may be even more different than my own, but if I could make it through college, undiagnosed, with a 3.48 GPA than anything is possible!

Basketball

I played basketball from early childhood through high school and received a basketball scholarship from KCC. I played both center and forward. I also have taught several lessons in basketball while substitute teaching and ran an after school program in which I created basketball lessons for instructors and was responsible for supervising and evaluating the instructors. I ran an adult basketball league for 2 years as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a degree in Health and Physical Education K-12. I have been a substitute teacher for a cumulative 2 years, most of which was done at the elementary and high school levels. I have also worked in a few after school programs at the elementary level. This age group is definitely among my favorites because they are so new to learning and soak information up like sponges. I believe one of the most important things to remember is to keep learning fun!

Football

I played women's professional football with the Arizona Caliente (WPFL) for 1 year and the Phoenix Prowlers (WFA) for 2 years. I played left guard for 1 year and right tackle for 2 years. I have been an avid football fan throughout my life. I have also run 2 Punt, Pass, and Kick Competitions and as a member of the Phoenix Prowlers was involved in running a mini-camp for over 50 boys and girls.

Nutrition

My degree in Health and Physical Education required me to take several nutrition classes including both Introduction to Nutrition and Advanced Nutrition. I have also since stayed on top of advances in nutrition by regularly researching nutrition-related magazines and websites. Half of my student-teaching was done in a high school nutrition classroom.

Phonics

I have tutored several youth in reading and phonics, and one in particular that went from last in her class to first in her class in 4 sessions of tutoring. I am an avid reader and enjoy teaching both reading and phonics. I have a teaching degree.

Public Speaking

I took a few college courses in public speaking and I have had many jobs where public speaking was a requirement. As a child I was so shy I would not even talk to my own Grandmother and I hated to get called on in class, which is something that I didn't believe I would ever overcome. I am now one of the more vocal people I know. Though my first Public Speaking class was a major struggle I found that if I felt confident about what I was speaking about and I practiced my speech beforehand it was a breeze. The key is being "the expert" about the topic, after that confidence comes naturally.

Softball

I have played softball in some form from the age of 5 when I started t-ball. I was an honorable mention all-state shortstop and played in the high school all-star game. I took a softball scholarship to attend KCC, where I played 1st base and shortstop off and on. My batting average was .380. I have also coached softball for 1 year.

Special Needs

I have worked with children and youth with special needs in 2 summer camp programs and enjoyed it immensely. I also have experience working with adults with special needs in a senior center setting. I have worked with youth in adults who are hearing impaired (though I presently do not know sign language), autistic, cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, Down Syndrome and a few others.

Volleyball

I have played volleyball most of my life, from age 7 to present. In high school I was team captain and was offered a college scholarship to play, which I passed up for a softball scholarship. I have also played in volleyball leagues and play for fun.

Writing

I have a teaching degree and I have been writing creatively for most of my life.
