I am well-educated and experienced with children. My education includes a BA and MA from the University of Michigan in elementary education. I have also done college-level work at Delta College (near Saginaw), and at MSU in East Lansing. My personal experience with children includes teaching in K-8 in public schools. I have taught and substituted in K-8 classes. My teaching method involves cooperative/collaborative work with the students. I like to know what they think is their difficulty (ies), and what they think would most help them. I will suggest things I can do to help them. I would hope we can work out a plan that incorporates all our ideas.
I taught programming at Lansing Community College and computing in several community colleges including Washtenaw Community College, Baker College, and the University of Michigan. I worked as a Computer Systems Consultant at U of M doing a variety of tasks--much of it as a technical writer producing documents on how to use various computer systems for U of M students and staff members. I wrote user guides for an engineering software company about their programs and for their clients.
At present, I write a variety of non-fiction documents--shorter ones and books. One of my stories was published by the Ann Arbor News as a Guest Opinion. [I have had many Letters to the Editors published, also.]
I will enjoy helping you with your education. I always enjoy spending time with young people and children. It is fun to see people improve their skills. My schedule is flexible. I'm available most evenings and weekends and in the late afternoons. I would like to meet in a local library or coffee shop preferably in the Ann Arbor area.
I can also help older students prepare for college prep tests like the ACT (and SAT). I did the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) myself. And, I have taught college age students and adults often. I would like to 'brush up'' on the ACT tests. [Will look for materials in the local library.] I am well-educated and experienced with children. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My BA in Education at the University of Michigan was for teaching K-8. I'm familiar with K-8 children: I raised 3 sons, tutored them, and supervised their education; I have tutored my grandchildren at times; I was a Den Leader in the Cub Scouts for several years.
I had 4 1/2 classes in English in HS. My BA major was Art; but my first Major was English. I have written user guides for a software company. I worked as a writer for the Univ. of Michigan for many years. I have written as a freelancer.
I prefer a Macintosh computer after starting on mainframes, minis, and PC. Taught and did technical writing at the University of Michigan. Work on a Macintosh everyday: e-mail, writing, photo-essays using photos and text.
When I worked as a writer for the U of M, those of us in the writing group would proofread each others work.
I proofread my own writings--currently a book about Michigan pioneers. My two editors review each final chapter--so far they have not asked for any changes. One of the reviewers is my cousin in England, who has published 3 books herself.
