About Matthew

Hi everyone! My name is Matthew. If you are looking for a tutor in mathematics, I'd love to work with you.

I graduated first in my class (Summa Cum Laude) from Ohio University in 2013, majoring in Electrical Engineering with extended coursework in mathematics. I'm now a PhD student at the University of Michigan, researching state-of-the-art problems in Robotics and Applied Dynamical Systems/ Control Theory. I have a passion for mathematics, and I enjoy tutoring and helping others learn.

I really enjoy math, and I also have extensive coursework in mathematics. I will be earning a mathematics M.S. along with my electrical engineering PhD. My graduate mathematics GPA at Michigan is 4.00/4.00 (overall GPA 3.98/4.00). My undergraduate overall GPA was also 3.98/4.00.

I am knowledgeable in most undergraduate-level math subjects, but also in several graduate-level math subjects including (but not limited to) Topology, Real Analysis, Nonlinear Dynamics, Differential Equations, Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra. I have experience tutoring students in most undergraduate math subjects, and I have the additional experience as a graduate student instructor for electrical engineering courses at the University of Michigan.

Please feel free to contact me if you're interested!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I use calculus every day in my own research, and love using it. I really enjoy sharing my passion for calculus with students. It is very satisfying to help a student finally understand a difficult concept for the first time.

I have taken enough math credits at the University of Michigan to obtain an M.S. in Mathematics along with my Electrical Engineering PhD, and I have lots of prior experience tutoring in calculus.

Differential Equations

I have taken multiple courses in Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems Theory. I also use the subject extensively in my own research on Robotics -- I work on building mathematical models of robots using differential equations.

I am knowledgeable in all topics, including (but not limited to) linear equations, linear systems theory, and the qualitative theory of nonlinear differential equations. I will be earning a mathematics M.S. along with my electrical engineering PhD.

Linear Algebra

I have taken multiple Linear Algebra courses. I also use the subject extensively in my own research. I am very knowledgeable in all topics, ranging from basic matrix theory (inverses, eigenvalues, determinants, etc.) to abstract vector spaces, linear transformations, inner product spaces, etc.
