About Will

As a student of psychology, I have become passionate about the learning process. This manifests itself as both an interest in psychology as well as a desire to utilize what I have learned about the mind to become an effective educator. I graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago, where I worked as a peer tutor. The Tutoring Center was one my favorite places on campus, and I worked so hard for my students I was honored with the Tutor of the Term award my senior year. I have carried my tutoring experiences forward as a private tutor for dozens students in the two years since graduating. I am now a PhD student in the Psychology department at the University of Michigan, continuing my growth as a scientist and educator.

My greatest areas of expertise are in the sciences: namely psychology, chemistry, and biology. I have tutored these subjects at both the high school and college levels. I have also had extensive experience with both ACT and GRE prep. One of my students increased her ACT score by 6 points after only 3 tutoring sessions! That remains one of my proudest accomplishments. My style is very encouraging. I know that these subjects are hard! But many times all we need is a boost of confidence and we can achieve great things.

I love any and all feedback on our tutoring sessions! If you are not satisfied with any tutoring session, I will gladly refund you.

I also do require a 24-hour cancellation notice in order for me to best serve my various clients. However, rescheduling sessions ahead of time is absolutely no problem! My schedule is sometimes hectic, so I understand when other commitments come up!

I reside near downtown Ann Arbor. I am happy to travel to your home or to a public space like a coffeeshop or library, whatever is most convenient and comfortable for you.

So let's learn together and have fun doing it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I achieved a 34 on the English section of the ACT, with a 34 overall score. I have been tutoring ACT prep for the past year with students at all different levels. I also am an avid reader and writer. Reading books is almost as good as studying for the ACT and it's much more fun, so I encourage all of my students to read a bit each day!

ACT Math

I achieved a 34 on the Math section of the ACT, with a 34 overall score. I have been tutoring ACT prep for the past year with students at all different levels. I was on the advance Math track in my high school and have taken higher level statistics in college. These courses have given me a broad perspective on Math that I bring to each tutoring session.

ACT Reading

I achieved a 33 on the Reading section of the ACT, with a 34 overall score. I have been tutoring ACT prep for the past year with students at all different levels. One of my recent students increased her score from 22 to 29 in just a few sessions!

ACT Science

I achieved a 34 on the Science section of the ACT. I am also currently pursuing a career in the sciences so I have some real-world experience that I can use to help round out our tutoring sessions.

Algebra 1

I achieved an ACT Math score in the 99th percentile and, more recently, a GRE Quantitative score in the 95th percentile. I have tutored about a dozen students in ACT Math, which is heavily reliant upon the fundamentals of Algebra. These students have been at a wide range of mathematical aptitude, so I have experience teaching these concepts at many different levels.

Biology

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from undergrad with minors in biology and neuroscience. I was a biology and chemistry tutor at Loyola's tutoring center for 2 years, where I earned a Tutor of the Term award. I also privately tutored a genetics student for 6 months last year. I am currently working in a neuroscience lab at Northwestern and keeping up with the current scientific literature.

Chemistry

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from undergrad with minors in biology and neuroscience. I was a chemistry tutor for college students at Loyola's tutoring center for 2 years, where I earned a Tutor of the Term award. I also have privately tutored several high school chemistry students, one of whom pulled her failing grade to a B in just a few weeks. I am currently working in a neuroscience lab at Northwestern and keeping up with the current scientific literature.

Elementary Math

I have experience tutoring math at all levels, from elementary math, ACT Math, and the GRE Quantitative section. For elementary math, I like to mix drills with fun games that keep the student entertained and engaged. I also try to relate math skills to real-world situations like counting money and telling time. These techniques have been proven to be quite effective at both familiarizing children with math concepts as well as boosting confidence.

English

I graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago. I also completed the interdisciplinary honors program there, which was extremely writing intensive. I achieved a perfect score (170/170) on the verbal portion of my GRE. I also continue to write for scientific publications in my job as a lab manager.

Genetics

I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and minors in neuroscience and biology, so I took genetics and a genetics lab. I received an A for both classes. I also was a private tutor for a genetics student at Loyola for six months. He had a learning disability, and yet he still achieved a B in the class.

GRE

I received a 167 Quantitative and 170 Verbal on the GRE (each score is out of 170). I have had over a dozen GRE students of vastly different ages. One of my most recent students did very well on his test and got into several Ivy League graduate programs!

Just a bit about my style: I use the "GRE for Dummies" prep book to tutor. That's the book that I used for my own prep and is also the best of the books that I reviewed. I like to go through all of the concepts that you will need to know with this book. Then any other prep book or online resource with lots of practice questions would be the next place to go, and we can work through those together as well!

Psychology

I graduated summa cum laude in 2014 from Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and minors in biology and neuroscience. I have extensively studied many facets of psychology and completed an honors thesis on the cognitive neuroscience of learning and memory. I am currently working in a psychology laboratory as a lab manager and am starting doctoral school in the fall.

Writing

I love to write, and especially to edit! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago with honors in Psychology. This required an enormous amount of writing for both my science and my humanities classes. I also frequently tutor for the ACT, which involves a writing portion, so I am familiar with both short-form and long-form essays.
