About Kristin

Since 1988 I have been working with students to improve their writing and their understanding of the English language. In classrooms, at my kitchen table, and in numerous other settings, I have met with students individually and in groups to help them find ways to communicate their thoughts in print.

I have experience working with students from junior high through graduate school. I have worked with students with specific learning needs. It is my joy to encourage students at all levels to celebrate their abilities and continue to learn. In partnering with students and parents, I continue to grow in my knowledge of writing and learning.

I would be happy to help you improve your skill with writing, grammar, literature, or ACT/SAT prep. I am also available for editing -- resumes, college essays, Master's theses, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a bachelor's and a master's degree in English. In both programs I earned a 3.8 grade point average. I was an English teacher and English department chair for nine years.

Grammar

As an English teacher, my students and I did daily grammar drills. I have taught the parts of speech, sentence diagraming, and editing to my students. I am also familiar with many textbooks and Internet sources for teaching grammar.

Literature

For nine years I taught British literature, American literature, and Introduction to Literary Criticism. I prepared students for the AP Literature and Composition test. I am well-read and have attended both a day-long and a week-long AP Literature training course for educators.

Proofreading

I have been grading student essays for twelve years. I have a bachelor's and a master's degree in English. I have proofread/edited three books and a number of dissertations, essays, and theses for students from middle school through graduate work.

Writing

For eleven years I have taught college composition and high school composition. I prepared students for the AP Literature and Composition test. I am an avid writer and maintain my own blog. In the past I have been published in a nation-wide newsletter for teachers.

Absolutely wonderful!

Kristin was warm, friendly, and immediately adapted to my child's learning style. She gave us links to work on during the week, and good things to review. I would definitely use her again, and would recommend her highly!
