As a tutor, I bring a wealth of experience working in education--beginning with my work tutoring a struggling first-grader in the "Trailblazers" program at Pioneer High School. Since then I have worked with dozens of students in all sorts of different capacities, including teaching English in the Bolivian jungle, helping struggling students in Washington, DC, and coaching neighbors' kids on SAT prep here in Ann Arbor. I love doing work that makes a real difference in people's lives and helps them prepare for success.
I recently spent nine months working in Latin America and perfecting my Spanish, giving me the expertise to effectively teach both Spanish and English as a second language. One of my greatest strengths is also coaching writing; as a journalist, my work has been published in places like The Atlantic and Miami Herald. I'm also comfortable working on tests like the ACT and SAT, which I excelled at as a student. My strategy is to teach students not only the material but also the strategies for successful multiple choice testing.
I understand that every student has a different learning style, so I tailor my approach in order to best meet student needs.
I typically meet students at a quiet cafe in downtown Ann Arbor, but I am also available to meet at your home or whichever location is most convenient and comfortable for you. I look forward to working with you and answering any questions you may have! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a photographer and photojournalist whose work that has won awards and appeared in regional and national publications. I have experience using Photoshop for both technical and artistic purposes, as well as experience tutoring new users on the program.
I have experience with extended, in-depth tutoring of elementary age children. I served as a tutor for an entire school year, conducting multiple sessions per week with two struggling students: a third-grader in Washington, DC and a first-grader in Ann Arbor. With both students, I provided supplemental help with each day's assignments, including reading, math, specials, and study skills. I also worked hard to form a personal connection with my students, since they often needed extra help to be motivated to complete their assignments. I was supervised in each case by a professional educator who discussed tutoring and pedagogical strategies with me. My work with both students led to gains in achievement and increased enthusiasm for learning.
I teach Spanish in a 100% immersion school environment and have spent over a year living abroad in Latin America, including time as a medical translator for American doctors and Peruvian patients.
