About John

Hello!

As a child, I attended Montessori schools until the 8th grade, giving me a very unique perspective on learning and teaching. In the Montessori environment, understanding is stressed over memorization. This means that instead of only teaching you how something is done, I think it is just as important that you know why something is being done. At the high school level, I attended Brother Rice High School, marked for its outstanding academic record as well as its focus on leadership and service. I currently attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and I am on my way to receiving my degree in Biomedical Engineering. Although I am still a young student, I believe that it gives me an edge over other tutors, because it was not too long ago that I sat in the same seats that you currently do. Throughout high school, I was a straight A student, and I am continuing to do well here at U of M. I can offer help in a wide range of subjects, specializing in mathematics, and put frankly, I'm a pretty nice guy!

My tutoring experience ranges from helping my little cousins and other family members with their homework to being involved in many tutoring programs such as GRASP (Grand Rapids Academic Summer Program) and Kumon. I believe that I am a good tutor because of my ability to assess how each specific student thinks, and my ability to use this information to help each particular student. I understand that every student is unique and that they do not learn in the same way, which is why some students have trouble in school. Just because a teacher's set curriculum does not necessarily adhere to the student's way of learning, it does not mean that the child is not very intelligent. The wonderful thing about one on one tutoring is that it is all about the student, and finding the best way that the student learns! I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve success by helping you discovering the way that you learn and unlocking your potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I received a 34 on the math portion of my ACT. I have a very broad knowledge of all of the subjects that the test covers. Also, it wasn't too long ago that I myself was taking the ACT, so I still remember how the test is structured. I can not only provide your son with knowledge of how to do the problems that he is presented with, but I can also teach him techniques on how to take the test, because with standardized tests like the ACT, knowing how to take them is just as important as knowing the material.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring people in math for pretty much as long as I can remember, even if they were friends who just needed a little extra help. I started doing it officially a few years ago. While I may not have a teaching certificate and I am still young, I have never received less than an A in any math course, and I believe that the fact that I am still a student gives me an edge on other tutors because I was in the same boat as your son not too long ago and I remember how the system works.

Algebra 2

I would be happy to help you with your Algebra 2, and assist you with anything from matrices to logarithms.

Chess

As a child, I attended a local Montessori school where, at the age of 4, we were required to learn how to play chess. I mastered the game by the time I was 5, and in the 15 years since then, I have competed in and won many local tournaments. I am very confident in my ability to teach someone how to think with a chess mindset and show them how to play the game.

Elementary Math

I have always had an affinity for math. As a child, I was always placed in advanced math classes, and I spent my summers enrolled in programs that helped me to improve even more! As I grew, so did my passion for mathematics. I received a 34 on the math portion of my ACT as a high school student, and when I decided to attend the University of Michigan, I chose engineering as my major, allowing my love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to come full circle.

Prealgebra

I have been teaching Prealgebra for almost 3 years now. Ever since I was little, I have had an affinity for math. I began tutoring kids when I started my first year of college here at the University of Michigan, and the kids that I have helped have had great success in their classes. I would love to work with your child and help them better their math skills to do well in school and increase confidence!

SAT Math

I have been helping students with the Math portion of the SAT ever since I took the test myself a few years ago. Although I am young, I believe that being a student myself gives me an advantage over other tutors because it wasn't too long ago that I was in your shoes.
