About Ellen

My tutoring qualifications include that I am in the process of completing my training as a Waldorf Education Teacher for grades 1 - 8. In addition, I am currently a substitute teacher at the Rudolf Steiner School in Ann Arbor and work on an as needed basis. I just completed the 30 hour comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education.

My style of tutoring is eclectic in that I assess the learning style and needs of each student and adapt lessons accordingly. Sometimes, more than one method is used since research shows that students need to experience material from one than one modality sometimes in order to learn effectively. In all cases, a multi-sensory approach is used.

My other experiences include divorce and family mediation and counseling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3d, 4th, 5th and 6th grade math in Ann Arbor as a substitute teacher. I have taught the introduction to numbers, the 4 processes, long division, decimals, fractions, some geometry and basic algebra. I am currently in the process of finishing up my certification as a Waldorf teacher for grades 1 - 8 through the Waldorf Institute of Southeast Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Elementary Math

Substitute teacher for 1st through 8th grade in all subjects.

Tutor for 1st through 6th grade in math and language arts.

Phonics

I have just completed the 30 hour comprehension Orton-Gillingham training through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. In addition, I am a substitute teacher at a Waldorf school in Ann Arbor, Michigan for grades 1 - 8.

Public Speaking

I do a significant amount of public speaking as a substitute teacher in a private elementary school in Ann Arbor, as an instructor for EMU in their continuing education program for social workers needing CEU's for licensure, and in presenting at conferences on topics related to social work. In addition, I have trained volunteers to do public speaking in the area of domestic abuse. I have a law degree and a master's in social work. Both of these degrees and careers require skills and confidence in public speaking.

Reading

I am certified member of the National Tutoring Association. I have just completed the 30 hour comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training for teaching reading, spelling and writing through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. Furthermore, I teach reading as a substitute teacher and to my own 10-year-old child. It is important to make sure there are no learning issues with your child and to identify his or her learning style to determine the best approach to learning any subject. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to learn more.

Spelling

I have just completed the 30 hour comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education for teaching reading, spelling, and writing. In addition, I am a substitute teacher at a Waldorf school in Ann Arbor and have been for the past 3 years. I expect to finish my Waldorf teacher training by Fall 2014.

Study Skills

As a parent, tutor, and substitute teacher I have experience in working with students from 1st through 8th grade. Helping them to learn how to study and to be organized is just as important, if not more, than learning the material. If students can learn how to study, then they can learn most anything. This includes knowing a student's learning style as well as how to break material down in a way that helps students learn how to learn. I have a law degree and a masters in social work. In addition, I am finishing my teacher training through the Waldorf Institute of Southeast Michigan and sub regularly at the Waldorf school in Ann Arbor.

Vocabulary

I have just completed the 30 hour comprehensive Orton-Gillingham trainings for teaching reading, writing, and spelling through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. It includes a component for teaching vocabulary for grades K - 12. In addition, for the past three (3) years I have been, and still am, a substitute teacher at the Waldorf school in Ann Arbor. I expect to complete my Waldorf teacher training by Fall 2014.
