About Katherine

Dear Students and Parents:

What if your curiosity became the strongest desire in your life, including curiosity about what you really want and how to get it? Chances are you'd rarely be bored. No matter what circumstances you faced, you'd realize that alternatives exist and you'd be ready to explore them. You'd live each day applying beginner's mind, a state in which you assume you don't know about a subject and you are open to exploring it. Your life would seem open to possibilities and you'd be ready to take on new adventures. Helping students to cultivate this love of learning is what I do.

I am a certified teacher in Language Arts and Political Science, grades 6-12. I've been a substitute teacher in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties of Southeast Michigan for four years. As a late entrant into the teaching profession and as a person with local family responsibilities, I chose not to accept employment as an educator out of state. So I became an itinerant teacher. I'm glad I did, because even as a substitute teacher, I have helped students to find the where-with-all within themselves to tackle academics, even when students pretended not to care.

How is it that I've been successful on this path of leading students? I furnish the circumstances in which a student thrives. To learn, you must be comfortable. A simple snack assures you are nourished. A quiet place means you're less likely to be distracted. A regular time that you can look forward to means that you enjoy predictability. And, well, you're working with me, so you are in for a treat. I will see the best in you and I will find a way to reflect this potential so you can see it for yourself. I have plenty of experience doing this because I've worked in various fields, including consulting, reporting. marketing. Yes, I ask questions and more than likely you'll feel okay about answering. I'm a good listener.

Your education is all about you. Really. Your focus needs to be on what you what, why you want it, what you can do to get it, what stands in your way and how you can move around these obstacles. Yes, I admit to having been a former Girl Scout, but the kind of educational trail I'm willing to help you blaze will not only help you make the grades you might need, but it will give you a means to refresh your commitment to yourself. That's learning that will benefit you for your entire life. I know. I practice what I preach.

So, please feel free to contact me by email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

Katherine

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I tutor all concepts necessary to advance to Algebra 2, such as writing and solving equations, probability, factoring, graphing and slope.

Algebra 2

Helped students trying to get into the military pass their entrance test. Also tutored a high school student in Toledo, OH.

English

I assist students with word usage, grammar, spelling and proper use of syntax, as well as understanding colloquial versus formal English.

Public Speaking

As a former consultative sales person for twenty years, I have given talks on a wide variety of subjects, from marketing and finance to education of students. I have had to research content for these speeches. As a former investigative reporter for my hometown newspaper, I know how to conduct research. I also have attended journalism graduate school with a 4.0 GPA, my norm. I have the skills you seek and I would be delighted to assist your student in developing and delivering an excellent presentation.
