Grand Valley State University (Math, Secondary Ed.)
My name is Marty. I am currently a Grand Valley State University student. I am majoring in Mathematics and Secondary Education and I am continuing to gain more experience working with students. Outside of the classroom I enjoy participating in intramural sports and I am a member of the GVSU ski and snowboard team.
I have never been a formal tutor. By that I mean that I have never been paid to be a tutor. Being that I am the only math major in my friend group, I often helped tutor my friends in almost every level of math. What I do have formal experience in is coaching. I coached youth football for 3 years and I believe coaching and teaching/tutoring are similar. What I enjoy most is the process of watching students/athletes learn. I love watching them gain an understanding of a concept that the once thought was impossible to learn.
I love math. I wish everyone loved math as much as I did. It has been my best subject to this very day. I have succeeded in every math class I have taken from algebra 1 through calculus 3 and I plan to continue that success in my future classes. The classes that I have the most knowledge in are Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. There are many student out there who hate math. My goal is to make sure that every student I tutor, at the very least, tolerates and understands math. They don't have to love math like I do, but hopefully they will enjoy it more after their experience with me. I believe the best way to teach students to learn is through examples. The more examples a student sees, the more prepared the student will be. They will be ready for any scenario. Before a tutoring session I would like knowledge of the material the student needs help with. This will give me time to prepare and find examples that I believe will benefit the student the most.
I am available to tutor wherever the student and parents believe is best. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed in math! My name is Marty. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
