About Mary

I grew up on a small farm in Allegan and have always felt a strong connection to plants and animals, so MSU seemed like the best place to go to college. Studying plant biology/horticulture was a good fit for someone who loves to play in the dirt. At 19 my stated goal was to feed hungry kids. I studied international agricultural systems with the plan to work in developing nations. I ended up following a Navy officer's career around the country, but have had many opportunities to feed hungry kids, including working with inner city youth as a plant biology teacher teaching gardening and environmental education. I lived in Washington state for 20 years, where I also wrote a weekly column for a small town newspaper and published two children's books. I love to write and continue to do so, and would be open to helping students with writing skills.

This past year I returned to Michigan to turn our family farm into a learning center. I have been taking classes at MSU in a doctoral program and am specifically looking at vermicomposting as my research topic. I am an environmental activist and have spent time in D.C. supporting the efforts of Appalachia Voices in their work to stop mountaintop removal coal mining and also fracking. This August I trained as a Climate Leader with the Climate Reality Leadership Project and have made several presentations to community groups enlightening them to what is happening with our climate.

I have tutored students in biology, math and reading and raised three gifted students of my own. I enjoy working with dynamic, enthusiastic, energetic youth and feel that I bring a lot to the table. Thank you for your consideration, although I am probably not as tough as a tutor or teacher as many people. I am more of a facilitator and encourager than a drill sergeant as a tutor or teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

While I don't have a degree in mathematics, I have always been an excellent math student. I love doing math. I made it a game with my own children when they were growing up and they all were proficient in math.

Botany

I have a masters in horticulture from Michigan State University with a focus on fruit and vegetable production and physiology. I am certified as an arborist, which requires extensive training on tree biology, genus and species identification and more. I also am a certified Washington State Professional Horticulturist and have taught high school plant biology.

Ecology

I have been an environmental activist for several years attending trainings with the Sierra Club and other organizations that focus on environmental restoration and preservation. I did my student teaching at the Theler Wetlands, an outdoor classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I took the Elementary Education Praxis test and scored in the top 15% of the nation. I am confident that I am fluent in elementary education subject matter.

Elementary Math

I have always been comfortable with math and enjoy teaching and doing it. When my own children were young we did a variety of math games and they grew to become very proficient in math.

Elementary Science

I have a masters in science from MSU and, while more of a plant biologist and biologist, I am not afraid of science and enjoy doing scientific experiments and teaching science to children.

Grammar

I worked for publishing companies and newspapers for many years and am a published writer. I enjoy grammar, proofreading and writing and feel comfortable with grammatical questions and issues.

Literature

I have always loved to read and feel comfortable around literary issues and with books. When my sons were in middle school I read to them every night. Together we read nearly all of the Newbery Award winners.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I took classes in teacher training on how to teach PowerPoint to students. I taught some classes in it at the elementary level and feel comfortable teaching the basics of PowerPoint to youngsters and adults.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word since it became available. While there are always new things being added to the program by Microsoft, I am grateful that such a program exists and feel comfortable in my use of it.

Phonics

I wrote a children's book renowned for its ability to increase phonemic awareness. I took many teacher training courses in reading and taught my own children to read.

Spelling

Some people are naturally good spellers. I am one. I am a visual learner and visually take in the correct spelling of words. I feel comfortable with my own spelling ability, having served as a proofreader for several publishing companies, as well as teaching spelling to children.

Vocabulary

I served as a newspaper writer and columnist for over 17 years and feel quite comfortable with my own personal vocabulary and with teaching vocabulary words to children. When my children were middle school aged, I taught them using the Greek and Latin roots.
