Hi there! I LOVE to teach and have done an excessively-nerdy amount of learning in the realms of pharmacy and pharmacology, drug kinetics and dynamics, and human physiology/pathophysiology. I am adjunct faculty with Ferris State University's College of Pharmacy, Grand Valley State University's Physician Assistant Studies program, and Michigan State University's College of Medicine. I also bring medical/pharmacy students and residents on rotation at my primary site, the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit.

While I do enjoy didactic, lecture-style teaching, I thrive more in 1-on-1 and small group environments. I love helping students learn and master the art of pharmacology, and I fervently subscribe to the mantra that learning is better than memorizing. I am also a true believer in learning styles, and if we work together I will certainly ask about yours! Humbly, I do take pride in being able to individualize the approach to learning pharmacology - some people need pictures, some people need metaphors, some people need 12 examples; some people want to sit and be taught, some people want to dive in and learn by trial-and-error.

I joke that pharmacology is a super-nerd subject, but in all seriousness if you are pursuing a career in medicine at any level, pharmacology will impact you and your patients. Do I want to help you pass your exam? Yes. Do I want to help you "get through this horrible pharmacology class so I can move on and never think about drugs again!?" :) Of course. But more than that, I would love to help you LEARN how drugs impact the body and various diseases so you can be a better clinician moving forward.

A little about me: I received my PharmD from Ferris State University (go Bulldogs!) and went on to complete 2 years of post-doctoral clinical training in adult critical care and cardiothoracic medicine. Since I still apparently hated the idea of making a full salary, I went on to complete a 6 month fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery and heart/lung transplant medicine. Since then, I have been the lead clinical pharmacist for the Heart and Vascular Institute at my tertiary care transplant center, interacting with patients in the ICU, cardiac surgery, and VAD/Mechanical Support realms. Working in an ICU environment demands mastery of many realms of medicine: cardiology, infectious disease, hematology, neurology, critical care, emergency medicine, and more. My passion is helping others develop an understanding and (maybe even) a passion of their own for the importance and power of pharmacotherapy.

I would love to hear more about your current healthcare pursuits and assist however I can in making you a more knowledgeable provider. Please reach out if you have additional questions and/or would like to find some time to chat!

Pharmacology

After finishing my PharmD I completed 2 years of clinical residency specializing in adult critical care, then completed a 6 month fellowship to subspecialize in cardiothoracic critical care. I am board certified in clinical Pharmacotherapy as well as Critical Care Medicine. I am adjunct faculty and teach routinely at a college of pharmacy (Ferris State), a college of medicine (Michigan State), and a school for physician assistants (Grand Valley State University), as well as mentor/precept students and residents year-round at my clinical site (Cardiothoracic ICU). I have a passion for taking a subject most healthcare learners dread and making it interesting, engaging, and retainable.

CJ is a polite and wonderful tutor

The session with CJ was very informative and helpful. I am a new grad nurse working on the med-surge floor. CJ explained and taught me how to select and use as needed pain medications ordered by doctors. CJ also taught me how to choose an antibiotic drug in a patient with a history of reactions. Your lesson was crystal-clear and well-prepared. I would like to learn from CJ again when I have questions related to pharmacology. Thank you, CJ for the excellent and productive learning session. I am glad that I found CJ.
