Merrimack College (English)
I welcome the opportunity to help your son or daughter in the areas of reading, writing, or any aspect of Language Arts. If your child is between the ages of 5 and 16, I think that we could be a great match.
I worked at The Merrimack College Writing Center for 3 years until receiving my Bachelor of Arts in English, cum laude. I loved collaborating and assisting my peers on all aspects of their papers in a wide range of subject areas. I also tutored an elementary school girl at her home in Lawrence MA beginning in her 2nd grade year until she completed 5th grade. I assisted her in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, and language arts and helped her to meet and succeed in her curriculum work. When I first started working with her she "hated" reading and spelling - her self confidence in these areas was so low she would barely whisper more than a word or two out loud. We started with simple pronunciation and spelling and as her trust and confidence grew so did her achievement. It was hard work but I loved being a one on one coach, mentor, and teacher.
During college I also worked as an intern at a publishing company which led directly into my editorial career. I have been working as an editor and writer in the textbook publishing field for over 20 years. My area of specialization is development editing, which is basically a professional version of tutoring except my students are professors and subject matter experts. I collaborate with authors on all aspects of editing, restructuring, and rewriting materials, flow of ideas, organization of content, writing style, appropriateness for target audience, etc. -- you get the idea. I also do medical writing for print and online products and apps.
I am fortunate to be in a field where I can work part time out of my home. Now that my children are pretty independent I have time after school or in the evenings for tutoring work. It would be an honor for me to work with your child and pass on my expertise in, and passion for, a subject area that I know and love.
It is a bit challenging to pass over background information without being too biographical so I hope the following information is helpful: My family and I have lived in York, Maine for 12 years. During this time I have worked as a classroom and library substitute teacher for grades K-4 in the York School System. I have been an active volunteer in the schools, the public library, and as a Girl Scout leader. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, and outdoor sports and I love dogs, watching movies, and anything to do with the beach. I have been a reading and writing "nerd" ever since I was a child. I would love the opportunity to pass on my passion and knowledge to your child whether they are struggling in any aspect of elementary, middle school, or high school English or just need some extra help with a "neutral" (i.e. non-parental) figure.
Thanks for your consideration. Janice J. Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
