About Jim

I am an English instructor at Southern Maine Community College, and a publishing writer and poet with one book and a number of awards. For the past 14 years, I have been teaching college courses from Elements of Reading and Writing (required of students who fail the initial entrance exam), through the basic compositional courses on into literature and the humanities. Most of my students are glad to be working with me, and I am glad to be working with them.

Teaching the Elements course can be as pleasing to me as teaching literature, and one of my greatest pleasures is to work with individual students as they pass through all, or most, of these courses. They get to learn--and often to enjoy--subjects that they never thought they would, and I get to watch them grow and change and become stronger.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
