My name is Richard and most of my students call me Coach Rich. My students called me this when I coached my first year of high school basketball and it has stuck ever since. I have always enjoyed teaching and working with helping children achieve. I started teaching when I was in first grade. I was blessed to be able to read at an advanced third grade level when I started school. My first grade teacher would send me to other classes to help other students to learn to read because of my ability. I have not always been a teacher however; my life has had many other areas in which I utilized my abilities to teach. I did not actually start teaching until 1996. I started out as a high school basketball coach and I took over a teaching a science class that year. The following year I taught remedial math and coached. I then decided that I would rather teach a younger group of students where I could have a more positive impact on their lives, so I taught for seven years at the middle school level. I specialized in remediation teaching for math and English. I also have two years of experience with special needs children. During my time at the middle school level I was able to help students that were averaging below 60% on competency ratings to achieve on average of above 83%. I have a very easy going and simple approach to teaching that my students enjoy. My philosophy is simple; I treat my students with respect, like they are someone special. My method of teaching is based on positive reinforcement in my students. This where I believe a lot of teachers fail. They see students as less than them and they're not. They are just as important as me or anyone else. I also let my students know they are accountable for themselves; no one else is but them. My success has come from years of learning and listening to other professionals and molding that information to fit me. I have always been able to work with students and help them accomplish their goals. Not because of me being special but because I recognize that each student is special.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
