About Daniel

Good day,

I am a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education with a 3.81 GPA, Magna Cum Laude Recognition, and a B-5 Certification option with a background in birth through third grade education. Additionally I have an up to date Mandated Reporter Training Certificate and fingerprint card.

Prior to this experience I have completed practica and had volunteer opportunities with children six months to 9 years of age. This wide range of experience gives me the advantage of not only focusing on where the child is currently, but also on the child's prior and future development.

During my ECH education classes I constructed multiple curriculum units focused on children's interests, including, insects, fall, balls, and winter. These included lesson plans, classroom designs, and resource listings relating to different subjects of study. Keeping topics relevant to children helps to maintain their interest and focus. This can be expanded to reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary tutoring.

When a student enters the primary grades, play is transitioned out and traded for hands on experiences which act as an avenue for students to practice cognitive skills, as well as communication skills. In social settings children practice social skills, communication and self help skills. In a developmentally appropriate educational setting a curriculum of academics supporting an interest in literature, beginning math concepts and skills as well as writing skills can be addressed through environmental print and books, and social interaction opportunities. As the child grows, academics become more structured and students are introduced to new methods of learning through print, spoken instruction, visuals, and kinesthetic activities.

My strength lies with small group instruction.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
