About Lyndell

What drives me when teaching or tutoring is helping students achieve that "aha!" moment--when what they've learned in class so far, experienced in life, read, and discussed with me all comes together in a flash of insight or genius. These moments are glorious to experience with my students! In my decades of working with students of all ages (K-senior citizen), these moments are achieved when science is relate-able to the student's every day life and to the things that are important to them in life. I get to know my students, and what is important to them, and then find ways of making science relate to their lives.

My Masters of Science is in Biology, where I focused on marine biology, fisheries, ecology, and evolution. My research project was a diet study of cownose rays, a migratory species of ray found on the Eastern coast of the U.S. I developed genetic tests to determine if cownose rays were eating shellfish of commercial and ecological importance. I published this research in 2014, so I have experience with the scientific publishing process and can help with peer review, editing, and writing! During my M.Sc., I taught 7 semesters of general biology and environmental biology labs. We covered a range of topics including introductory genetics, nutrition, cell biology, evolution, ecology, and animal behavior. I also have years of experience teaching experimental design, the scientific process, and how to read and write scientific papers. Most recently I taught organismal biology labs at Bates College, Maine, where we focused on structure and function of cellular processes, cell division, basic animal anatomy and body plans, diversity of life, and evolution.

In 17 years, I have worked with students at all ages and backgrounds (middle school, high school, undergraduate, mature students, students with special needs)--not just in the classroom or in outdoor education settings, but also in one-on-one tutoring sessions. I previously substitute taught, worked in special education, conducted in-class programs at elementary schools, and conducted research with high school students in outdoor, experiential education--banding birds and checking nest boxes, among other ecology projects!

I have a very diverse background, personally and academically, that I bring to my teaching. I lived abroad as a teenager, I studied abroad during my undergraduate, and I have lived and worked on islands in the Pacific. I have a B.A. (Magna cum laude) in History and Theatre from Butler University, where I studied medieval and European history as well as theatre production. After my undergraduate degree, I worked in museum and non-profits, I volunteered as a dramaturg on a theatre production set during the Elizabethan period, and I studied the cultures and history of wherever I was living or visiting at the time (Australia, Pacific islands, China, Galapagos, Celtic history, United Kingdom, for example). I have a degree in history, but I also have a life-long interest in archaeology, anthropology, and cultural history that I bring to the table!

I am now in Maine but am also set up for online tutoring and in that case, I could work with anyone anywhere! Our first meeting and consultation, where we will discuss current progress and goals, is free. I have listed a 24-hour notice cancellation policy, but I would definitely schedule make-up sessions. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your learning goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Zoology

I have a Master's of Science in Biology, with a focus on Ichthyology, Fisheries, and Ecology. I conducted research with sharks and rays during my master's, either as side projects or for my thesis. I worked for conservation agencies and natural resources management, on fisheries and aquatic ecology projects. I taught Organismal Biology labs at Bates College, which focuses on animal diversity, anatomy, and cellular form and function. At the undergraduate and graduate levels, I took courses in Animal Behaviour, Conservation Biology, Ichthyology, Marine Biology, Fisheries, Evolution, Evolution of Sociality in Animals, and Zoology.
