My varied experiences in all levels of education will, I feel, lend needed credence and understanding to any students I come in contact with in any tutorial endeavor. I've also had a number of experiences in public relations and managerial environments and employment and consider this an advantage in dealing with students regarding motivation and conceptual understanding of subject matter.
When teaching in public education, I conducted a number of private tutoring sessions on my own time, particularly at the fifth grade level and considered this extremely helpful and positive in reaching a number of students. I believe in individual tutoring as a means to assist students that otherwise may not receive the attention necessary to succeed when having difficulty in certain subject areas. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a former teacher of fifth and sixth grades, I also taught two years of special education and children with special needs. In educating special needs students and ADHD students, necessary skills in listening, concentration, positive reinforcement were constantly employed. It is necessary to perpetually be aware of behavior techniques and verbally acknowledging accomplishments as well as goals that are met. Keeping the learning environment to limited distractions is paramount.
I am a former high school and college basketball starter at the guard position. I coached 5th grade boys' and 7th grade girls' teams.
While teaching at the elementary level, my varied subjects of instruction included math, reading comprehension, history, geography, fundamentals of essay writing and science. I also coached basketball and softball at the fifth grade level. I was co - director of the student council and director of the annual spring talent show.I also established after school tutorial sessions for needy students.
As a former teacher of English and Composition, I feel comfortable in instructing students in these areas. I also edited my college newspaper for two years. I was also a member of the Famous Writers club in Bridgeport,Ct.
