Bio

Dear student,

Like you, I've faced challenges that come with big life changes. About 30 years ago, I moved from California to Maine and adapted to a whole new climate, population, and way of life. Then, around 10 years ago, I changed careers; after 25 years as a newspaper writer and editor, I started teaching.

I began as a literacy tutor for a Cambodian woman who couldn't read or write any English. Then I took on some reading and writing classes for native-born adult education students....

Then I took on some reading and writing classes for native-born adult education students. I went back to school to learn more about how people learn language and how I can better help them.

Today I teach large and small classes of ESOL students in two programs. I also work with adult education students who want to learn more about college writing and American history. Usually I'm able to give students the one-on-one attention that they need. I try to help them see that they can read and write more than they think they can. Learning doesn't have to be a struggle: In ESOL class we use conversation, real-life problem-solving, stories and games. English is not an easy language but it can be learned. Writing in English is hard for many native speakers but it's my home territory, and I enjoy helping others explore there.

My ideal student would be an adult who wants to improve his or her English skills for work, citizenship, or further study. I would also enjoy working with a child who is struggling with spelling, grammar, or organization. I look forward to meeting you.
