About Sean

To any potential students, I'm Sean and I have a bachelors degree in teaching high school English. I used this to teach high school for a couple years, but ultimately decided to start working on my masters and becoming a college professor. That said, I miss teaching and had a great time with it. I've been in an educator role since I was 16, first just teaching swim lessons to kids. Now I've taught not only swim lessons, but lifeguard classes, assisted one of my college professors in teaching ASL, and have had my own English classroom for a couple years.

In regards to English, I've taught units on a number of big classical novels such as 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and more. I've helped students improve their writing skills, be it for creative writing (mostly poetry) or analytical writing where we deconstruct the text for meaning and make an argument. I've worked with students to build up confidence in their writing, opinions, and give them the tools they need to defend their points of view.

To me, the teacher needs to connect with their students. Some students need someone strict (think McGonagall from Harry Potter) to help them stay focused and on task. And that works great for some students. To continue with the HP theme for a moment, some students need someone more like Lupin. That is how I prefer to teach. I can push you to work hard, but I make it enjoyable and make a point to get you invested in the content as well. And most importantly of all, I do my best to help you feel confident in your own ability. Get in touch if you're interested, and we can see if I'm the right person to help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is something I have a variety of experiences with. I have performed on stage, and also acted as an assistant director for a theatrical performance before. That role mostly involved working one-on-one with actors to help develop their characters and performance skills. I have also performed on stage at poetry slams numerous times, reciting/performing poems from others as well as my own original work. This experience allowed me to better teach future students how to perform in front of an audience, as I made students write/perform their own written works of poetry.
