I am a teacher with experience in grades K-5. My passion is Literacy, which includes Reading, Writing, and Word work skills. I have also been trained as a Literacy Coach for elementary level teachers. As an honor student at each level of my education, I continue to strive for and teach high expectations. I love the moments when children realize "I am a reader" and are excited to continue learning.
I also love to teach Math and Science. The love of learning in all arenas includes a well rounded education and learning about as many subject areas in our world as possible. I consistently see the value of children having background information in a number of areas. One of the saddest thins I've heard was from a high school student. She said, "I don't remember being taught to read to love reading. I remember being taught to read to answer questions." I am a teacher who teaches for the love of loving to learn.
I have been involved with learning about Common Core state standards, planning with them in mind and writing curriculum that meets Common Core Standards.
The most significant qualifications include my passion for children, teaching Literacy, and my on going Professional Development. I believe it is essential to continue learning as I continue teaching.
My education has always involved learning in the Literacy arena. From my undergraduate work to my Masters program, an additional 30 hours of education and my Coaching certificate, Reading courses have been a common thread. I am also a Maine Writing Project Fellow, which required intensive writing and teaching.
One of my most important roles in life is as a grandmother. One of my grandsons is a child with Autism. My first hand experience has by far been one of the greatest blessings I know. My grandson has taught me beyond any other experience I've known. Also, each year, I have students in my classroom who are children with Autism, Aspergers, ADD/ADHD, etc. I have been actively involved as an advocate for many of them from the beginning of the identification process to fulfilling the needs of a current Individualized Education Plan. I am flexible in providing services that allows for the differentiation of each child and needs in each academic area.
I am excited to hear from you, be involved in getting to know you and being your teacher/partner in learning! Every day holds new possibilities as we learn together. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
