About Peggy

Qualified by degree(s), certifications, and experience to tutor from elementary to high school, I have taught and tutored a broad range of subjects. In love with learning, my happiest moments in my teaching career were those when I heard "Oh, I get it!" Yes, I heard those words often. My gifts included the organized sequencing of instruction, the presentation, and the assessment of understanding. Very early in my career I identified those almost universal instructional mistakes that have led to continued confusion in students' minds. My success in teaching was fueled by my burning love of learning and a love for igniting that in my students.

Having had certifications to teach mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies through ninth grade and geometry in secondary school, I have taught, as a generalist, in middle schools until the world changed and specialization became the model. It was then that I began teaching only mathematics. I have my master's degree in mathematics education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My standardized test scores are stellar; my students consistently scored well.

Public school teaching also included tutoring before school, after school, and during lunch breaks. My tutoring experience includes high school students who were referred to me and youngsters from Central America who needed help in reading and math.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught for thirty years earning a master's degree in mathematics education from UNC-Chapel HIll and earned National Board certification. Most of those thirty years were in the company of seventh graders, first as a generalist (the world's last standing true generalist) and then when the county received state money for middle schools, I found myself teaching pre-algebra. I am a quiet person. I listen. I ask questions. Yes, my working with your child is a very good choice.

English

My public profile tells you that I have successfully taught middle-school students both as a generalist and as a mathematics teacher. When once asked to draw a representation of who I was, or more precisely, my world view, I draw a globe because my interests are not narrow.
I believe in the integration of ideas. As a mathematics teacher, I often found philosophical and mathematical parallels. The mathematics was a tool for scientific, sociological, or environmental investigations. Mathematics was the stories of the mathematicians, the solving of puzzles, and the organization of thought. It was reason.
I am a reader with my reading history having breadth and depth and with a desire to increase both. I am a teacher with understanding of curricular requirements and knowing what is required of the successful communicator in the world of work and careers. I am a writer and have written my way to attaining high honors as an undergraduate, a National Board certification, a master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. And I write for myself.
I am well qualified to tutor English in the many ways it presents.

GED

When I needed a job apart from my work in the public school classroom, I became an Adult Basic Education teacher. In this position, I worked with those who could not read to those who were preparing for their GED tests. With ranges of abilities, those students achieved and succeeded as they were highly motivated and had me to guide them along their way.
My being a generalist with a wide range of knowledge, skills, and teaching expertise was what those students needed then and what GED students need now. I have the latest published GED preparation materials and a desire to help others succeed.

Reading

In my teaching career, I was certified to teacher all subjects in middle school except music and physical education. In the years in which I taught a self-contained seventh-grade in a rural North Carolina county, my students consistently scored very well on standardized tests. I often heard from former students and their parents that they attributed success in later grades to my teaching.
