About Hugh

I have 40+ years of experience as a teacher of English, Religion, and Philosophy in 8 schools and a college. Since "retirement" I have taught elementary school children in close collaboration with their teachers and in after school programs. I also teach at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke, a program for retired adults, sit on two Duke Institutional Review Boards which review protocols for clinical trials on human beings, and I play trumpet (badly) in a band for retired adults. As a teacher, I develop the kinds of relationships with students and their families which make them want to become lifelong learners. I love to learn, and I know how to foster that enthusiasm in others. I am able to teach all levels of English, and because I have a clinical social work degree in family therapy, I am able to create the conditions for strong family collaboration in the learning adventure. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I was for many years a clergyman whose responsibility it was to preach a sermon most Sundays. I had public speaking training to do this in seminary. I have also been a Director of Admission and Academic Dean and Head of School in independent schools, and in all these capacities I made public speeches. I have trained high school kids to give chapel and assembly talks. I once had a radio program on the NPR affiliate WKSU in Kent, Ohio, for the Amwerican Friends Service Committee.

Religion

I have a theological degree at the master's level as well as several graduate hours beyond that. I taught religion for nine years in two secondary independent schools and a college. I have taught Old and New Testament, theology, comparative religion, ethics, and philosophy of religion at these levels as well as philosophy.
