About Aubrey

***BEST-RANKED LOCAL TUTOR***

Hi!

My name is Aubrey, and I am a patient, friendly, flexible, & caring tutor who is also very effective, & results oriented and offers in-person or online sessions in 30+ subjects.

I am a National Merit Scholar, and within the Greater Portland Area, I am also the *highest-rated WyzAnt Tutor* - offering tutoring in more than 30 subjects including the following:
- Prealgebra
- Algebra 1
- Algebra 2 (my best subject!)
- College Algebra
- Geometry
- SAT Prep
- General Computer
- Vocabulary
(and more!)

In fact, in over 15 years of teaching and tutoring, I have acquired more than 10,000 hours of private and small group tutoring experience.

From founding and operating my own academic tutoring service from 2001-2008, to classroom experience instructing high school level math and science, and developing my own effective SAT Prep curriculum, I can can help you or your child get to exactly where you need to be in order to see the success you need.

My teaching style is flexible, clear, encouraging, and fun! In fact, I have spent years and years developing an awareness of what makes each individual student "tick" and fine-tuning my own ability to cater to that individual student's learning style!

Although I am certified through WyzAnt to teach over 35 subjects (and I do enjoy them all), my truest specialty at this time is Math, with a particular emphasis on the Algebra's, especially Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and College Algebra - they are so crucial to success in all other areas of Math!

Personally, I appreciate the simple beauty of math and learning, and finding ways to share that beauty with my students. But even more than that, I enjoy mentoring my students in math so that they are not just learning skills, but also how to develop their own way of thinking about math that truly works for them!

In fact, in my experience as a tutor, I have repeatedly helped self-described "math haters" and even helped a "hopeless in math" student go on to choose "PreMed as a major!

My students consistently see increases in not only their scores, but their academic confidence too, and personally, I think that's important!!

We must have a dual focus on developing the student's foundational skill sets, including critical thinking skills, and improving confidence and motivation. In order to catch up, keep up, or get ahead in any subject, both of these things MUST happen!

In short, my students' long-term academic confidence and success are my ultimate goals, and I've spent many many years practicing how to get them there! :)

Thanks for checking out my profile on WyzAnt! Please take a minute to read some of the feedback I have received from some of my past students and their parents - and of course, feel free to check out the rest of my Profile!

Message me if I can answer any questions for you, or if you think I might be the right tutor for you or your child.

I hope to hear from you soon. :)

Best!

Aubrey J.

P.S.:
A portion of all of my tutoring income is donated to help children in need - so they can receive clean water, food, safe shelter, quality health care, education and loving care.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am a National Merit Scholar and my ACT scores were in the top percentile ranking in the nation, in all major subject matter areas.

I have successfully helped students with ACT preparation in all 4 of the major subject areas of:
- English
- Mathematics
- Reading
- Science

I believe it is equally important to master foundational skills as it is to learn to "beat the test” by learning tips and tricks and quick, effective test-taking skills. There isn’t a “magic trick” or super short-cut, but I can help make improving your ACT scores rewarding and fun!!

Algebra 1

My teaching experience includes thousands of hours of Algebra instruction such as:
- Pre-Algebra
- Algebra 1
- Algebra 2
- Advanced Algebra
- College Algebra

My enjoyment and expertise in Algebra tend to be contagious to my students, precisely because my teaching style is a carefully blended mix of expertise, organization, patience, understanding, and creative teaching!

Algebra 2

- Pre-Algebra
- Algebra 1
- Algebra 2

- College Algebra

ASVAB

For almost 20 years, I have been helping students achieve their life goals by mastering and surpassing test score goals in the following exams:

- SAT
- ACT
- GED
- GRE
- ASVAB
- GMAT
- and more!

My instructional approach is fun and effective!

Chemistry

I have many hours of experience in teaching Chemistry at the high school level, and being a "math expert", I have a tendency to be PARTICULARLY helpful in the Chemistry topics which most students find the most challenging, such as balancing chemical equations and stoichiometry.

Elementary (K-6th)

Aubrey has experience teaching children ages 3 to 12 in a variety of subjects including math, reading, spelling, science, history, and study skills. She has a delightful way with younger students as well as old, meeting each child right where he or she is at in the learning process. Aubrey teaches subjects in a caring and dynamic way that is customized to your child's unique learning style and personality. She teaches her students skills and confidence by creating a successful learning atmosphere that builds on your child's foundational skills, challenging and encouraging each student for his or her optimum learning experience, while having the most fun in the process!

English

I am a National Merit Scholar, achieving a 740 on my SAT Reading exam.

I began reading when I was 3 years old and was reading the newspaper by the time I was 5.

However, just because someone is good at a subject, does not mean they are going to teach it well.

I use a flexible, motivating and compassionate instructional approach that often leaves students wondering where all our session time went, and their parents wondering how their child is suddenly so motivated in their most challenging subjects.

My goal is to strengthen foundational skills and spark an enjoyment for all aspects of literature such as:
- reading comprehension
- spelling and grammar
- essay compostiion

GED

I have thousands of hours of instructional experience in test-preparation including:
- ASVAB
- GED
- ACT
- SAT
- GRE
- GMAT

I combine my years of expertise with an organized, efficient, creative, patient and motivating results-focused approach to teaching test-preparation.

My # 1 goal is to help you succeed!

...because chances are that you are not just taking a test to take a test - you are taking a test to move forward in some other area of your life!!

General Computer

I have fluency in all basic computer skills including Word Processing with IBM and Macintosh computers, Excel spreadsheets, and online navigation.
I can assist many basic computing skills that are useful in today's social and job cultures, such as:
- email
- word processing
- spreadsheets
- online search engines
- social media accounts
- starting a blog
- basic bookeeping

Geometry

I have over 10,000 hours of experience tutoring students of all ages in all levels of mathematics from pre-school through College Algebra and Pre-Calculus.

Geometry is a particularly challenging subject for some students, as it requires solid foundational algebra skills, in coordination with the abilty to visualize shapes and figures.

I help students get ahead in their Geometry classes with a coordinated approach to learning including assistance with:
- assessing gaps in foundational skills such as learning fractions, or manipulating negative numbers
- building on the student's strengths, such as linear thinking, vs creative thinking
- increasing strengths confidence and in foundational skill areas
- instructing in Geometrical concepts and principles

Prealgebra

I have literally thousands upon thousands of hours Algebra-teaching experience.

I realllly like Algebra... ;)

And... that enjoyment tends to be contagious to the learner, precisely because it is carefully blended with a healthy mix of compassion, patience, and creative teaching. Give it a try!

PSAT

Aubrey is a National Merit Scholar, scoring in the 99.97th percentile of students in the U.S. on her PSAT, and excels at helping her students develop the foundational skills and confidence necessary to succeed on the test. Aubrey has seen dramatic results in helping her students increase their PSAT scores, even surpassing their goals by 10% or more.

Aubrey has offered classes in PSAT preparation in addition to working one-on-one with students, and has spent hundreds of hours helping her students meet or exceed their PSAT goals. If you combine effective testing with skills with confidence, nothing can hold you back on the PSAT!

Reading

Aubrey has experience teaching children ages 3 to 12 in a variety of subjects including math, reading, spelling, science, history, and study skills. She has a delightful way with younger students as well as old, meeting each child right where he or she is at in the learning process. SAT Math

I am a National Merit Scholar and my SAT scores were in the top percentile ranking in the nation, in all major subject matter areas.
I also happen to be one of those "rare" individuals who achieved equal scores in all subject areas: 740 in each.

I developed a successful curriculum of SAT preparation in all 3 of the major subject areas of:
- Math
- Reading
- Writing

My teaching is simple, clear, concise, accurate, creative, and fun!

I believe it is equally important to master foundational skills as it is to learn to "beat the test” by learning tips and tricks and quick, effective test-taking skills.

Study Skills

In my experience, the two key factors of success in any subject are skills and confidence.

It has been my experience, working with hundreds of students over the past 15 years or so in study skills and other areas, that skills and academic confidence can both be cultivated effectively.

Study skills such as time management, organization, and test preparation can be taught and are tremendously effective.

I also believe that motivation toward successful behaviors and performance are dependent upon each student's level of academic confidence. Unfortunately, a variety of interfering factors in or out of the classroom may 'stall' or set-back a students growth in one or both of these areas.

I teach study skills, but I also create an environment that fosters growth toward genuine academic confidence and long-term independence.

This twofold approach of addressing both skills and confidence simultaneously has been tremendously successful for my students.

My goal is to help you achieve full and long-term academic confidence with a solid skill set for independent success in school and life!

(Basically, for you not to need a tutor anymore. Shhhh ... don't tell the other tutors!)

Writing

I am a National Merit Scholar, scoring a 740 on the Reading / Writing portion of my SAT. Over my almost 20 years of teaching and tutoring, I have helped many students, and even adults with idea generation, proof-reading, and fine-tuning their writing skills.
I get really excited about writing well, and enjoy the process.
