Bio

Hi! My name is Alexander, and I've been teaching writing/English for just about 10 years now--first at a private high school, then at Colby College, UMaine, the University of Minnesota, Metropolitan State University, and (now) USM. I love working with students on writing for a lot of reasons, but I'll list just a few. First, each student I work with has different interests, and I get to explore those interests with them. Second, I enjoy the critical thinking and strategizing that it requires to take a RHETORICAL approach to writing--where it is specific and situated, where writers have to make active choices in relation to their audience, purpose, and the ongoing conversations they seek to join. Third, I get to provide more general mentorship about how writing differs within the world of higher education.

I might be a good fit for you if you're:
-a high school student looking to prepare for college writing expectations, or who is working on writing application essays
-a high school student wrestling with a literature course, struggling with the unpacking meaning/critical reading elements
-a first year college student struggling in a composition class or writing intensive course
-an advanced college student working to meet the situated requirements of writing in your major
-an early-stages graduate student who needs help with research writing, lit reviews, formulating research questions, etc. or with the thesis/dissertation

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

During my Ph.D. and M.A. I specialized in composition and rhetoric, which regularly involved research and teaching on spoken composition, work and study in Communication Studies, and forays into the land of speech/debate. This spring I will be teaching a graduate seminar on the Western rhetorical canon at Metro State, and that canon (tracing back to Aristotle and the Sophists) often emphasizes principles of persuasion as they relate to public speaking. Finally, all of the undergraduate courses that I teach culminate with a presentation of student research, before which I provide a unit on principles of effective public speaking and presentation. With "rhetoric" as the unifying principle at the core of my teaching and research, public speaking is at the center of the work that I do.
