Salve! My love of Classical languages hit me over a decade ago - sophomore year of high school - in ancient Greek class. Though I enjoyed the class, I did not have the requisite skills necessary to succeed in that class until two frustrating years later, in my senior year. It took a lot of review and heartache to get back up to speed with the class, but in the end, I was able to pull myself out of the academic hole I was in. This experience of how frustrating it can be for ancient Greek and Latin students whose skills do not yet match their interest in the subject has stayed with me and guided my tutoring philosophy.

Since then, I received my Bachelor's in Classical Languages from Fordham U, summa cum laude, studying in Rome at the prestigious Center for Intercollegiate Studies, winning multiple translation contests in ancient Greek, and completing graduate-level courses in ancient Greek along the way. Straight out of my undergraduate studies, I enrolled in the UMass - Amherst 'Masters in Teaching Latin' program. There I taught three undergraduate-level introductory Latin classes, studied abroad in Greece on a study tour of Greek archaeology, and was nominated for the University's graduate student teaching award by my students. Within the past three years, I have also become proficient in 'active Latin' teaching methodologies, and have spent over a month in Latin immersion environments. That being said, I am excited about and able to teach Latin in many other ways, and am knowledgeable about all of the major Latin textbooks from my Master's years.

I am currently employed as a middle- and high- school Latin teacher in Portland, Maine, where I am in my second year of classroom teaching.

Tutoring Latin and ancient Greek is routinely one of my favorite parts of the day. I love working with students as they discover, or re-discover their love for the languages and cultures of ancient Rome. Because of my previous academic difficulties with Greek, I can relate to students who struggle in the language. Because of my

Greek,

Greek

I have been studying ancient Greek (Attic, Homeric, and Koine) for over a decade, and tutoring it for four years on and off. I received my BA in Classical Languages from Fordham University summa cum laude. While I was studying there, I was a recipient of their tuition award for the top upperclassman student in Classics 2 years in a row, earned a 4.0 in the major, and won first place in a NYC-area ancient Greek translation competition. After graduation, I graduated from the MAT in Latin and Classical Humanities at UMass - Amherst (summa cum laude). In addition to studying language teaching methods and Classical language and literature, I earned my Massachusetts Initial teaching license for Latin and Classical Humanities, grades 5-12. Though I work as a Latin teacher now, ancient Greek is my first love, and I would love to help you reach your maximum potential in your ancient Greek study!
Latin,

Latin

I'm a currently-practicing middle- and high- school Latin teacher in Portland, Maine, where I have taught Latin to students in grades 6-12 for two years now. I received my BA in Classical Languages (Greek and Latin) from Fordham University summa cum laude. While I was studying there, I was a recipient of their tuition award for the top upperclassman student in Classics 2 years in a row, earned a 4.0 in the major, and studied Roman archaeology abroad at the ICCS (Centro) in Rome. After graduation, I graduated from the MAT in Latin and Classical Humanities at UMass - Amherst (summa cum laude). I have been tutoring students in Latin for over seven years now, and have tutored students as young as 10 years old and as experienced as adult students applying for Latin certification to teach Latin themselves! I am familiar with a variety of methods and curricula because of my MAT degree. I am most interested in active- and reading-based methods, but I am happy to build a program that works best for you.
Russian

Russian

I have spoken Russian as a mother tongue at home my whole life. As an undergraduate student, I also took courses designed for heritage speakers of Russian on Russian film criticism and literature. As a part of my Master of Arts in Teaching degree, I have become familiar with both cutting-edge foreign language teaching techniques and traditional, time-tested methods. I am eager to tutor beginning or intermediate Russian students as a supplement to their studies, or design curriculum for students looking to learn Russian on their own.

History

Classics

Classics

My undergraduate degree from Fordham U was in Classical Languages - in other words, the Greek and Latin languages plus the history, culture, art, and literature of the ancient Mediterranean. I continued my studies of Classics in my Masters in Teaching degree at UMass-Amherst, where I TAed two courses on the history of ancient Greece and Rome and took a slate of graduate courses about the culture, history, and language of ancient Greece and Rome. I have studied ancient Greek for over a decade, Latin for over seven years, and, in the course of my language studies, have also devoted a great deal of time to studying the history and culture of these two ancient cultures as well.

Great Attic Greek Tutor!

Alexandra was great! I came to her a few weeks before my National Greek Exam hoping to learn and understand plenty of content that my teacher had not discussed. She was great and very professional! She was well prepared and was good at explaining concepts. With her help my score improved a lot!
