About Amelia

Hello! My name is Amelia and I love helping others to learn. I've been teaching and tutoring languages (French, Spanish, and English) to students ages 3-22 since 2008. I learned languages from my immersion experiences - I lived in Mexico for a year, have a bachelors degree in Spanish, and lived in Montreal, Quebec for four years. I enjoy helping students develop a love and interest in other languages and cultures. Some ways I use to motivate and engage students are through music, video, and meeting people who speak the target language. Let me know your interests outside of school and we can work to make sure the subject matter is interesting to you.

I'm also experienced in general education K-6 and tutoring with elementary coursework. I'm available most evenings and weekends and can meet you wherever is most convenient- home, library, coffee shop, you decide. I live in Portland, ME and can travel around the Southern part of the state to help with tutoring. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing how we can work together.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I completed my BA with a double major, one of those being anthropology at McGill University. I wrote a senior thesis for my anthropology major on rites of passage ("The Rite of Passage of the Young Adult Cancer Patient: Moving Beyond the Liminal Phase"). My coursework included archaeology and medical anthropology, among others.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently work as an education specialist with the Department of Education. I have been providing instructional services to students this age for the past three years. I also have experience creating and advising tutors on Project Based Learning plans.

Spanish

I studied Latin American and Caribbean Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. I lived abroad in both Mexico and the Dominican Republic to improve my fluency in Spanish. My tutoring over the past eight years, is usually teaching Spanish, in particular to high school students.
