I have been a professional teacher for close to forty years and have enjoyed every minute of it.
I have taught children ages three to twelve in both private and public school settings. My passion is teaching Language Arts to children K-6. I know how to make the material exciting and memorable. My background is in the Arts - primarily theatre - and I believe that learning is always more fun if it includes a creative element.
I enjoy tailoring material to an individual and the challenge of finding which approach works best for each child. I have been a professional teacher for close to forty years and have enjoyed every minute of it.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a senior in high school, I received the Bronze Medal in the Waltz. I was also chosen to dance the Swing/Linde at the World's Fair. In Philadelphia (during the 70's) I taught professionally at The Next Step dance studio. I have taught Creative Movement classes (which includes some Ballroom) at Neighborhood Arts in Portland and at The Friends School in Falmouth, Maine.
I am a veteran teacher - both private and public - of over forty years. I was certified in the Vermont Public Schools for birth-2nd grade. I have taught children preschool through 6th grade.
Literacy is an area in which I have developed materials and methods that are fun and effective. I am a published poet and my plays have been produced. Most of my second grade class were reading on a fifth grade level, according to the DRA. When I had my school, The Schoolhouse, parents would ask me to do assessments for their children in reading, even once they had entered the public school.
My professional acting career began when I was seven years old in an Off-Broadway production of Family Portrait. I continue to perform - most recently with The Freeport Community Theatre and The Portland Players, here in Maine. Currently, I am doing one of the plays scheduled for the Playwrights' Festival in April.
I have had extensive theatre training and have been teaching acting workshops and directing plays for over thirty years.
I will happily provide a resume upon request.
