University of Maine (Animal Science)
I'm a junior at the University of Maine studying Animal Science, and have taught swimming and been a lifeguard for five years. I work in a microbiology lab at the university, where I make, test and analyze biological samples to diagnose animals. I earned a 4.0 GPA this past semester, and my cumulative GPA is a 3.7. I excelled in Organic Chemistry, earning an A in both the lecture and laboratory components, and received recognition from the professor for my hard work.
I have also tutored some of my fellow students in Algebra, French, and English. I enjoy teaching and tutoring, because it gives me an opportunity to put my education to good use and always presents a new, exciting challenge.
I graduated from Fitch Senior High School in 2011 and also earned an International Baccalaureate diploma for completing the program and scoring exceptionally well on the tests. I was a member of the National Honors Society, the girls cross country team, and the girls tennis team.
As a swim instructor, many parents have told me that they appreciate my patience and ease with understanding and adapting to their children's needs. I have also been told by a former supervisor that I have a special skill at breaking down a complex thought and explaining it so that the student will understand. I have worked with adults as well as children, and experienced much success. My proudest moment was when one of my adult students, who before taking lessons with me was terrified of the pool, swam the length of the pool with great form and ease.
Over the years, I have honed my natural ability to relate to people and be patient with students- children and adults alike- and become a better instructor with each experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took Organic Chemistry and it's lab component at the University of Maine this past year, and got an A in both. I have a very firm grasp of the concepts that are presented, and have experience working through the concepts with classmates. Having just gone through the course, the information is fresh and I understand the goals of the course as well as the order in which it is best explained.
I have taught swim lessons for 5 years, for children and adults at all levels. I also was certified as a lifeguard for 3 years. I lifeguarded and taught swim lessons for the Groton Parks and Recreation program, the YMCA, and most recently at the Wadawanuck Yacht Club. I have also taught private lessons for 3 years now. Additionally, I swam competitively in a triathlon last fall and won my division.
