I have had broad graduate and undergraduate coursework, as well as significant teaching experience, in the humanities and social sciences. The primary focus of my PhD and Masters' study was in The History of Religions, particularly, how various religions have shaped the historical development and creative arts of various nations and regions of the world. My PhD is from the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, California), my Master's is from Harvard Divinity School (Cambridge Massachusetts), and my BA is from the University of Maine (Orono, Maine; majored in History, graduated with Honors and Highest Distinction). My teaching experience includes tutoring and teaching junior high school students, high school students, college students, and adult education students in their senior years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took extensive graduate coursework in Biblical Studies and Biblical Hebrew language as part of my Doctoral work in Religious Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and my Master's work at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge Massachusetts. I am highly familiar with modern scientific approaches to biblical interpretation, such as, source criticism, redaction criticism, literary analysis, philology, historical interpretation, as well as comparative studies of the Ancient Near East. Furthermore, I am familiar with Jewish and Christian theological, exegetical, mystical, and Midrashic, interpretations of biblical texts. I have developed deep personal experiential insight into how studying the Bible can provide inspiration, and help transform our individual life, human relationships, and society, for the better.
In all honesty, I do not have any ESL/ESOL training, but I sincerely feel very confident of my ability to teach English to people whose native language is not English, because I have informally tutored foreign university students in English language speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and the students told me that they found my tutoring extremely helpful. Other relevant background includes the fact that I have a PhD and am a published author.
I have a Doctorate (PhD, from the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley, California) and a Master's Degree (from Harvard Divinity School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts), as well as extensive teaching experience, in The History of Religions (Religious Studies). Therefore, I am familiar with the theology, mystical/spiritual wisdom teachings, practices, creative arts, and historical development of major world religions such as, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, as well as Native American religions. I can help students explore and gain insight into their own religious or spiritual development, if they wish for me to do so.
My SAT reading qualifications include having earned a very high reading score on my SAT's, many years ago (700 out of 800). Other relevant qualifications including earning a Masters degree and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, as well as a B.A. in World History (earned with Honors and highest distinction). I am also a published author of two non-fiction books and numerous articles. All of those accomplishments required me to have advanced reading ability.
I think that my good study skills can be substantiated by the fact that I earned a Ph.D. (in Religious Studies) from the Graduate Theological Union (in Berkeley, California), and earned a Masters Degree (in Religious Studies) from Harvard Divinity School, and earned my B.A. in History (with Honors and Highest Distinction) from the University of Maine (Orono, Maine). Other relevant credentials include, some informal volunteer tutoring of Elementary School, Junior High School, and High School Students; teaching adult education classes at the University of Maine, and being a published author of two books and numerous articles.
