I am a very patient, caring tutor, and can help students develop a passionate love for learning and intellectual inquiry. I adjust my tutoring methods to the needs and preferences of individual students. Fields of study that I can tutor include, English (reading and writing), history, social studies, humanities, social sciences, creative arts, preparation for SAT and GRE, as well as others.

I have had broad graduate and undergraduate coursework, as well as significant teaching experience, in the humanities and social sciences. The primary focus of my PhD and Masters' study was in The History of Religions, particularly, how various religions have shaped the historical development and creative arts of various nations and regions of the world. My PhD is from the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, California), my Master's is from Harvard Divinity School (Cambridge Massachusetts), and my BA is from the University of Maine (Orono, Maine; majored in History, graduated with Honors and Highest Distinction). My teaching experience includes tutoring and teaching junior high school students, high school students, college students, and adult education students in their senior years.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

In all honesty, I do not have any ESL/ESOL training, but I sincerely feel very confident of my ability to teach English to people whose native language is not English, because I have informally tutored foreign university students in English language speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and the students told me that they found my tutoring extremely helpful. Other relevant background includes the fact that I have a PhD and am a published author.

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

I took extensive graduate coursework in Biblical Studies and Biblical Hebrew language as part of my Doctoral work in Religious Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and my Master's work at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge Massachusetts. I am highly familiar with modern scientific approaches to biblical interpretation, such as, source criticism, redaction criticism, literary analysis, philology, historical interpretation, as well as comparative studies of the Ancient Near East. Furthermore, I am familiar with Jewish and Christian theological, exegetical, mystical, and Midrashic, interpretations of biblical texts. I have developed deep personal experiential insight into how studying the Bible can provide inspiration, and help transform our individual life, human relationships, and society, for the better.
Religion,

Religion

I have a Doctorate (PhD, from the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley, California) and a Master's Degree (from Harvard Divinity School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts), as well as extensive teaching experience, in The History of Religions (Religious Studies). Therefore, I am familiar with the theology, mystical/spiritual wisdom teachings, practices, creative arts, and historical development of major world religions such as, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, as well as Native American religions. I can help students explore and gain insight into their own religious or spiritual development, if they wish for me to do so.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

My relevant qualifications to tutor students in Social Studies include an undergraduate major in world history, as well as significant undergraduate coursework in political science, sociology, anthropology, and social psychology, which includes significant study of American government and society. My graduate work in Religious Studies and my postdoctoral reading and reflection have focused on public policy, social justice, peace, civil rights, and ethnic diversity issues that are also relevant to Social Studies. I sincerely believe that Social Studies is a strong area of expertise for me.
