About Heather

Hello, my name is Heather and I am a former elementary school teacher who loves working with children. I taught for five years in Boston, Massachusetts and Benton, Maine. For the past nine years, I have been a stay-at-home mom, and I have remained current in my field by regularly volunteering in my children's classrooms, teaching Sunday school, and substitute teaching. Additionally, I have maintained my teaching certification by taking continuing education courses. My goals as a tutor are to meet students where they are at academically and tailor my instruction to their individual needs. Whenever possible, I include hands-on and real world experiences to improve learning and comprehension of the skills being taught. It is always my goal to make learning both fun and effective. I look forward to working with you! Hello, my name is Heather and I am a former elementary school teacher who loves working with children. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified elementary school teacher, I taught in a self-contained classroom for five years. During this time, I instructed my students in all disciplines. In mathematics, I utilized hands-on learning, real world mathematics, and technology in my classrooms to successfully help children learn necessary skills. I taught reading in my classrooms using trade books and phonics and whole language instruction to help my students successfully progress as readers. In science and social studies, my methods included classroom experiments, project and theme based instruction, as well as classroom learning centers. Additionally, I have remained current in my field by regularly volunteering in elementary school classrooms and taking continuing education courses.

Elementary Math

As a certified elementary school teacher, I have utilized hands-on learning and everyday mathematics in my classrooms to successfully help children learn necessary skills. Additionally, as a classroom volunteer in both elementary and Montessori classrooms, I have assisted students in developing these same skills. Additionally, I spent one year as a teacher of math and technology, so that is another way that I can assist in math instruction. As a part of my continuing education, I also took a course in real world math instruction, so I will also be able to apply these skills to my tutoring.

Phonics

As a certified elementary school teacher, I have utilized phonices instruction in my classrooms to successfully help children gain phonemic awareness and progress as readers. Additionally, as a classroom volunteer in both elementary and Montessori classrooms, I have assisted students in developing these same skills. As a part of my continuing education, I am also taking a course in reading and phonics instruction, so I will also be able to apply these skills to my tutoring.

Piano

My experience as a pianist includes twelve years of formal lessons, performances, and competitions. I currently play piano for church services and events, as well as for my own enjoyment. Additionally, I have a background that includes music theory, history, and composition. It would be a pleasure to share the joy of piano playing with you!

Reading

As a certified elementary school teacher, I have taught reading in my classrooms using both phonics and whole language instruction to help my students successfully progress as readers. Additionally, as a classroom volunteer in both elementary and Montessori classrooms, I have assisted students in developing these same skills. As a part of my continuing education, I took a course specifically focused on reading and phonics instruction, so I will also be able to apply these skills to my tutoring.
