About Karen

Recently, I obtained my Educational Tech ll certification. This gives me the opportunity to work with students in grades Kindergarten through high school in the classroom or one on one in special education. My experience working with students began when my daughter (she is now 27!!) was in the third grade. I started volunteering in her classroom proof reading student's stories during their writing time; It was so much fun. Soon after volunteering, I realized working in the classroom with students was a passion of mine and I started substitute teaching.

My tutoring experience began when I started working in our local Junior High Library. One of the teacher's started an after school tutor program that was a wonderful opportunity for students who needed some extra help in a certain subject or just needed some help staying focused on getting homework done.

Teaching children to let their minds soar through reading and writing is so rewarding. There are students who really dislike reading and/or writing and I see them discouraged and struggling. I strive to find that one thing that gives them hope. One student found his love for reading from an Uncle Henry's magazine; he had an interest in cars and car parts. This sounds silly, but sometimes it starts with something as simple as that. Seeing it happen in the moment is amazing.

If your child is struggling in English, vocabulary, reading or writing, I encourage you to contact me I have 20 years of experience working with children. It's not easy to see your child struggle in an academic area. We all want our children to be happy and successful individuals. I know what it feels like to be that child and that concerned parent. I just want parents and students to know that I care and I'm here to help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
