Shawna, 8 lessons with Thor
Thor has been in education for ever a decade, teaching second and fifth grade. He is currently working on his master's in special education. He is a father of two teenagers, one of whom is in special education. He knows firsthand a parent's point of view when working with a struggling child. He has been tutoring one student for three years now. Through dedication, compassion and imagination his young student has made great strides in math.
Thor was born and raised in Albany, New York. Growing up his passion was hockey, sailing and windsurfing. His first taste of being a teacher was when he asked to teach at an ice skating clinic. Upon graduating from high school, he headed out west to earn his Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University. Soon after leaving Purdue, he traveled to Dallas, Texas and found himself teaching second grade. Circumstance beyond his control brought him back to the Northeast, where he currently resides in beautiful Maine
Thor has worked with a variety of students in reading, some include students that are English as second language, ADHD/ADD, at risk and enrichment. He works to improve comprehension, fluency, spelling and phonics.
Thor has taught in self-contained classes, meaning that he has experience teaching, math, reading/writing, science and social studies. On the teacher content examinations he has earned perfect scores in social studies and science and near perfect scores for math and reading/writing. You can be confident he is very knowledgeable in what he teaches
First and foremost, Thor's continued education keeps him on the cutting edge of best practices for education and this will be a benefit to your child. Secondly he tracks your child's progress, so you have evidence of progress. There is quantifiable data that your hard earned money is being well spent on helping your child. Finally, he uses positive rewards, fun educational games, traditional drills and exploration. Making the learning relevant to the student is made easier by getting to the know the student and their interests and tying into learning.
