Hi, my name is Michelle. I have a degree in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages. I'm seeking an ESL tutoring position in Maine where I can utilize my skills and experience to implement a positive learning environment for speakers of other languages in the Bangor area and to empower them economically and socially through the medium of English learning.
I have experience overseas and in the city of Chicago. I believe language learning needs to be meaningful; meeting the needs of the student(s). I believe everyone can learn a language and it is most effectively learned in community. However, that is not always available to the student and so a tutor can provide the one on one attention to target goals of individual students for a time. I take communication as priority before pronunciation, but love to teach pronunciation. I believe teaching cultural values and customs will help in knowing the appropriate responses, both lexically and orally, and I believe it is critical to one’s confidence and development of the target language.
I believe Language is primarily deductive in which a student discovers or applies knowledge. I believe intrinsic motivation from the student is essential for success. I believe language learning is primarily social; I strive for the ability to communicate rather than purely an academic pursuit. I believe my role as a teacher is to guide, facilitate, evaluate, negotiate, and monitor learning as well as be a resource for the students to tap into if need be.
I prepare the student(s) for success by giving the right language structures, strategies, and vocabulary, but also provide an atmosphere that appropriately provides challenges for learners to take risks with the language he/she has acquired. I'm very passionate about teaching and consider every teaching opportunity as a chance to learn. I learn together with the student(s) and strive to make learning most meaningful to their life situation. Consider me as your partner in learning. Hi, my name is Michelle. She is a tutor for my mother. She is really professional in teaching English. She always comes on time and she is very sweet and friendly. Studying with her is exciting, you don't feel the time passing with her. I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
