About Karen

I love kids. I love teenagers, I love middle schoolers (of whom I have two!), and I love younger kids, who are just starting to discover the magic of letters and words. I have been teaching for many years, in many positions. I am a K-12 literacy specialist and I have worked with students with learning disabilities, and with students struggling with reading and writing (my personal favorite). I also do a lot of analysis of standardized tests so I am well aware of the structure and the challenges that face HS students as they strive to master tests such as ACT and SAT. Tutoring offers me the opportunity to develop a relationship with a student. A trusting and fun relationship in tutoring is so important. Learning happens best under those circumstances and establishing that relationship is important to me.

I would love to hear directly from HS students looking for some reading and writing support, or help with those dreaded ACT and SAT tests! And parents of K-8 students, I would be very pleased to help your child over the hump to become fluent readers and writers on par with their grade level peers. I can work at the library, in your home, or mine or online; I am flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a special education teacher and a literacy specialist and I have worked with many ADD/ADHD high school students, including my own son. I understand the complexity of giving enough support while helping students to become self sufficient as they approach adulthood. I have had much success teaching students compensatory habits that allow them to work with their ADD/ADHD.

Phonics

I am a literacy specialist k-12 and I am trained in Orton Gillingham, and the LiPs Program. I have worked with dozens of students using these programs, and also using more advanced strategies such as teaching older students syllable rules, common endings, etc.
