About Neal

Bio

I’m an experienced elementary educator, professionally certified in both Massachusetts and Scotland. A life-long learner, I continue to push myself to both explore new domains and to stay grounded in the latest best practices. I've taught in high-performing public schools, independent schools, and even internationally at the American School of Barcelona. These experiences have left me well versed in a range of instructional approaches and have greatly improved my tool-kit of resources.

To each position I've brought enthusiasm, patience, and a wealth of content knowledge. Whether it's helping a student to dive into a novel challenge, or supporting a learner in solidifying an elusive skill, learning moments are what motivate me every day!

I've taught and tutored math from grades 4-7, including several base curriculums (Everyday Math, Math In Focus, CPM). A capable mathematician myself, I'm happy to provide enrichment and extensions, or to help students master challenging topics or skills through reteaching.

Whether helping to cement understandings from an existing curriculum or delving into topics of interest, I'm happy to help. I've taught science in grades 4 and 5, using the National Science Foundation curriculum to cover topics including simple machines, electricity & magnetism, ecosystems, weather, the human body, and general science practices.

Writing instruction is something I enjoy more than almost anything else. I've led writing workshops for 4th and 5th grade students, using the Lucy Calkins Writers' Workshop model for years. I've also designed and delivered my own one-week writing boot camps on everything from personal narratives and fantasy stories to journalism and literary essays.

Whether helping your student to feel confident with core skills or challenging them with engaging enrichment activities, I'm eager to serve!
