The most interesting and exciting thing about me is that I spent the past two years in Niger, Africa, the hottest and poorest country in the world! Not only was I able to visit giraffes in their native habitat, but also to stretch as a teacher and as human being in every conceivable way.

The most interesting and exciting thing about me is that I spent the past two years in Niger, Africa, the hottest and poorest country in the world! Not only was I able to visit giraffes in their native habitat, but also to stretch as a teacher and as human being in every conceivable way.

Initially hired simply as “Learning Support Teacher,” I created an entirely new Learning Support Department and served as both teacher and coordinator of services for ESL students (English as a Second Language) as well as those with special needs. In addition, I trained the faculty to enable our ESL students to be successful in the mainstream classroom, and served as Teaching and Learning Coordinator for the whole school. Finally, I established the Service Learning Program for the high school students. Though way beyond my “comfort zone,” these opportunities gave me a deeper appreciation of the privilege, the responsibility, and the joy it is to be a teacher.

Up until this year, I was a “certified” PK-G8 Elementary teacher, but had never served as a “regular classroom teacher.” When separate reading groups were established for grades 1 through 4, I became the Group 1 Reading Teacher for a class of 6- and 7-year-olds. As I put together unit and lesson plans, assessments, etc., in accordance with the course curriculum, I realized that this group of children was far from homogeneous; each one comes with a unique set of social-emotional needs and academic strengths and weaknesses. The teacher’s challenge is to braid these individual strands into a strong social network of personal and academic growth. Adding this “classroom teacher” experience to my “special needs perspective” makes me a great elementary teacher.

This year, as Group 1 Reading Teacher and also as ESL tutor for a high school junior, I expanded my understanding of English language development in many ways. There are of course the building blocks--alphabet, phonics, vocabulary, syntax, etc.--but English language learning is so much more! I am a great E

There are of course the building blocks—alphabet, phonics, vocabulary, syntax, etc.—but English language learning is so much more! I am a great English tutor because I am genuinely excited to have each student develop confidence and joy, to explore the richness of language to comprehend and express an idea from one brain to another—how cool is that?!

When I was in the 5th grade, I read the story of Helen Keller and her remarkable teacher, Annie Sullivan. I resolved at that moment to “become a teacher like that” who could make such a difference in the life of another person. Looking back now over 6 decades, I am gratified to feel that I have stayed true to that dream, to encourage students of all ages and abilities to understand their personal challenges, set personal goals, overcome obstacles, and reach their fullest potential.
