About Sarah

I am a Certified Literacy Specialist with more than 13 years of experience teaching reading to striving elementary readers in a public school setting. I have a Master's degree in Literacy Education and have been trained as a Reading Recovery teacher. I began my career as a Title I ed tech and then taught 2nd grade. Once I realized the amazing difference that I could make teaching students to read in an individualized setting, I knew that teaching reading was going to be my life's work. When I left public schools to spend more time with my own children, tutoring was a natural fit for me. I quickly discovered that I was able to provide a level of individualization and custom instruction that was not possible with the budgetary and time constraints of the school system.

I live in beautiful Southern Maine with my husband, a 13 year old daughter, a 3 year old daughter and our cat. I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, letterboxing, bowling and spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. My favorite thing about tutoring is seeing the excitement as my students are able to achieve new benchmarks, unlock new stories and become more confident readers and writers.

I have extensive experience teaching readers who are having some difficulty learning to read. I have a Master's degree in Literacy Education and am a Certified Literacy Specialist. I have been trained as a Reading Recovery teacher and engaged in extensive ongoing professional development in the field of reading instruction. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to provide just the right amount of support so a student stays on the cutting edge of their learning. I am able to strike a balance that moves children forward as quickly as possible, while keeping the student's success rate high.

I have had some Orton-Gillingham training and experience teaching with an Orton-Gillingham based program. Through my years of working with struggling readers, I have become skilled at recognizing students that would likely benefit from a multi-sensory systematic phonics approach to learning to read. In addition, I am in the process of obtaining my official Orton-Gillingham certification at this time.

A thorough understanding of English spelling patterns and techniques for working with visual memory are just two of the skills I bring to the teaching of spelling. The use of multi-sensory techniques and teaching the effective use of tools to check spelling helps me not only improve a student's spelling of words we study, but also provides them with a toolbox that they can use in a variety of situations.

I enjoy sharing the joy of reading with my students and look forward to helping you become a more fluent, capable reader. Please contact me today to see how I can help you open the doors of the magic of reading.
