About Dick

Bio

As a Ph.D. chemist, I am primarily a math and science tutor. However, I also have excellent grammar and spelling skills, so would be willing to tutor in those areas as well. I am also interested in history and geography (my wife often makes fun of my map obsession).

I have experience in a wide range of chemical topics, from 8+ years of industrial experience, along with experience in teaching chemistry (general, inorganic and organic) from six years teaching at the collegiate level.

As far as math goes, I like to impress my students with the ability to do apparently difficult math problems in my head. I do this with the various tricks we all learn in grade school, but neglect to use when the time comes to apply them (estimating is a big one). I would be happy to teach these tricks to any clients I see.

Computer

DOS,

DOS

I've been using computers since the early '80s. I've owned computers since 1988, using MS-DOS, along with 4DOS and DrDOS. I delayed installing Windows because I generally preferred using the command prompt to do things. Since then, I have used command line interpreters for other systems, such as Linux and VMS. I still use the terminal window on occasion, though not nearly as much as I used to.
General Computer,

General Computer

I have been using computers for about 30 years. I have used both PCs and Macs along with other, higher-end computers (such as Silicon Graphics and Varian computers, using their own operating systems). I got my first computer in 1988, and didn't buy a new computer until 1997. I simply upgraded every part the first computer (some parts multiple times) until there was nothing left of the original computer. As far as software goes, I have been using MS Office since the 1990's, although I now prefer Open Office (it's free, it's almost (but not quite) 100% compatible with MS Office, and it has some features that I like better than with the MS versions). I have used every common PC internet browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera), but generally stick to Chrome and Firefox (IE when necessary). I maintain my own wireless home network (we've had up to seven computers and other devices connected at a time). If I don't already know the answer to a question, I know how to get it. I've been using search engines and the internet since the mid- to late 1980's (well before it became available to the public in the early 1990's).

Overall wonderful tutor

Dick has been able to answer any questions I have covering organic chemistry. He is also able to provide tips and tricks to many concepts which makes learning the material a lot easier. He also pushes me when I'm answering problems. I always leave his sessions with a better understanding and a better disposition when it comes to tackling this tough subject.

Great Session!

Understands the information and is able to explain the subject multiple ways to aid to different learning styles. A warning to the lazy; he does not just give you the answer - he makes you think and work through it. He really pushes the student to learn the material! He is a great help with any level of chemistry and knows little tricks to help you remember important details.
