About Frank

I earned a PhD in English from Florida State University in 2010, an MFA in Writing from Vermont College in 2002, and an MA in English from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland in 2000.

After completing my PhD I served as a resident scholar at "The Southern Review," an affiliate of Louisiana State University. My duties as resident scholar included editing "The Southern Review" as well as teaching classes in the history of poetry.

Before moving to Florida to pursue my PhD I taught language arts, world cultures, drama, and world religions to eighth graders at Saint Anne's Episcopal School in Middletown, Delaware. Saint Anne's is affiliated with the nearby Saint Andrew's Episcopal High School where "Dead Poets Society" was filmed.

As a PhD candidate at FSU I taught undergraduate students introductory classes in college essay writing and the history of poetry. I also taught writing workshops in short fiction, the memoir, and poetry.

In addition to teaching classes at FSU I also worked at Florida State University's Writing Center where I regularly tutored student athletes including FSU football players and male and female basketball players. One other relevant and highly rewarding duty at FSU's Writing Center was meeting regularly with ESL graduate students to assist them with editing their PhD and MA dissertations in subjects as far ranging as physics, dance, and musicology.

My first book of poems was published in 2008 by Alice James Books. I have also published, book reviews, short fiction, and nonfiction pieces in national reviews and journals including "Ploughshares," "Columbia Poetry Review," "Barrow Street," "Rain Taxi," and "Narrative Magazine."

Beyond tutoring in writing and the study of literature and poetry, my areas of expertise include creating websites, recording music and podcasts, video editing, web design, and print design using Adobe inDesign. I can also help with organizational skills and planning with regard to college and career.

I am the father of two wonderful children, ages 10 and 13. My wife is a potter and ceramics teacher.

I am available to tutor on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and on weekends, and I am happy to conduct tutoring sessions at a library, cafe, or any public space most convenient to you. I am also willing to conduct tutoring sessions at your home.

Awards for my writing, scholarly pursuits, and teaching include fellowships from Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, a Walter E Dakin Fellowship from Sewanee Writers' Conference, and a Kingsbury Fellowship from Florida State University. I was also awarded the Dean's Prize in 2008 from Florida State University.

My greatest strength is my enthusiasm for learning and my willingness to share it with others. I would be delighted to share my enthusiasm for learning with you.

Please contact me with questions or to receive more details about the tutoring services I offer.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
