I graduated from Mount Holyoke College in Western Massachusetts in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Romance Languages and Literatures. I became a teacher later in life and am proud of my accomplishments and personal development as a teacher in such a short time. Since my first teaching assignment as an elementary French and Spanish teacher in 2007, I have taught languages in elementary, middle and high school settings in Maine, Massachusetts, Florida and now Tennessee.
Furthermore, I have been trained to deliver instruction in ELA including phonics and reading comprehension. I am also qualified to tutor elementary math, science through middle school, social studies/history through high school, ACT/SAT Test Prep, and organizational/study skills.
As a tutor, I have worked with students K-12 and some adults. In each case, I forged a strong academic relationship with my student which resulted in success and increased the student's confidence level. For example, I tutored a 7th grade student in Florida's mandatory Civics course which requires a rigorous End of Course exam that counts for 2/3 of the final grade. The student, who originally struggled with a C, brought her grade up to a B and passed the test beyond the minimum passing grade. Her parents were thrilled with this achievement and requested that I assist her with 8th grade Social Studies the following year. In addition to teaching French and Spanish, I have worked one-on-one with students on the autism spectrum, and have many special education credits towards a Master's Degree in this field. In this capacity, I have worked on development of social and academic skills.
I ask lots of open-ended question that requires critical thinking skills. I help students understand how to draw inferences from the text and I use lots of Total Physical Response strategies to create a kinesthetic memory which helps the student draw connections.
