About Evan

A decorated graduate of top colleges, I have 15 years' experience teaching English language, literature, writing and test prep (including math) at American private schools, serving both high-performing and developing or learning-challenged students. I have also taught across the humanities and arts, including history, as well as music and art history. Throughout my career, I have also tutored privately in the same subjects, working 1-on-1 with students from middle school through college-aged, and from New Orleans to New England. This means I can help a wide variety of students, from those needing work on the fundamentals of grammar and syntax to those applying to competitive universities and needing to hone their college application essays.

I am an expert in standardized test prep, with an unbroken record of improving students' scores, primarily on the SAT but also on the ACT, GRE, and Praxis exams (I tutor Math as well as Reading and Writing). I am a careful listener, an empathetic learner (I, too, have a learning difference), and a very good explainer. Using a simple, metaphor-and-analogy based system that makes even the hardest concepts easier to learn, I also sort of specialize in "last minute" work and help students calm down, so they can focus and learn what they need to in a timely fashion. When I work with students, they have my undivided attention and absolute respect.

I was educated at Amherst College, in MA; the University of Oxford (Lincoln College), in England; and Loyola University-New Orleans, obtaining undergraduate and advanced degrees in English as well as an advanced degree in Education. I graduated from Amherst magna cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 2000. I was voted Most Outstanding Graduate Student in the School of Education at Loyola in 2007. Teaching, I was voted Best New Teacher at a school in New Orleans in 2001, where I later became the youngest department chair in school history. Later, I moved to Western Massachusetts, where I also served as department chair. I am now taking time off to complete a book.

On the personal side, I'm right on the border between Generation X and the Millenials, which means I interact well with today's teenagers, college students and parents alike. I love cyclocross bike racing, video games, and skiing / snowboarding. I have a black lab who is ridiculously spoiled.

If we meet, I'll work at quickly identifying and focusing on your specific needs, no matter what your age or past achievements. Obviously, though, I work at a different level with college students or adult learners, who are to me more like peers I can help out, as I would my friends. I'm sure you can teach me a thing or two, too! Please reach out to get to know me--I would love to be part of your learning plan. My availability is very flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I in high school and also tutored it for the SAT with more than 50 students.

Music History

I have a deep and abiding love for classical music, the history of which I studied first in high school (part of IB course) and then at Amherst. Beyond college, I have been an active self-learner as well and have written reviews of Opera performances in New Orleans as well as tutored students in music history and writing about music at Tulane (usually, of course, for their long-put-off term papers).

I am familiar with all major periods of western music, from medieval to post-modern, with particular expertise in High Classical and Late Romantic periods. I also know theory and can use this knowledge to teach technically proficient students. I have taught courses on Beethoven, Minimalism, and non-western polyphony.

Political Science

I was a Political Science major at Amherst College, never receiving a grade below A-. Though invited to write a thesis, I was already writing one in English, so I graduated merely "rite" (a thesis was required, at that time, for Honors distinction).

Praxis

My Praxis I scores are in the top quartile for each subject test, and a near-perfect score on the Mathematics sub-test. I also have Praxis II scores, with > 90th percentile for each sub-test. I have a perfect score in the English Literature and Language Content Knowledge test.

SAT Reading

I am proud of my 15-year, unbroken success rate: with literally hundreds of SAT students, I have never had even one who failed to improve after following my plan for tutoring!
