My academic background is rooted in science and engineering and I regard my expertise in mathematics and science subjects as extensive. I also have excellent skills in English (grammar and writing) and am well versed in history and geography. My formal education includes a bachelor of science degree (U.S. Coast Guard Academy), two master of science degrees (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and special coursework in Systems Engineering (Defense Systems Management College).

I completed a full compendium of post graduate coursework in teaching (George Washington University) to sit for teacher certification exams and taught at the secondary school level. However I have found tutoring to be far more rewarding and successful and have instead applied my time and effort to this end. Students I have assisted perform very well and often mention that had I been their teacher they would have learned the material easier. I explain it may appear easier because I have customized the instruction to their learning style, interest, aptitude and ability.

It is my belief and experience that learning is most effective when one has grasped the fundamental concepts rather than simply committing to memory specific examples or regarding completion of certain rote assignments as the only metrics of subject matter mastery. My teaching approach therefore focuses on this more than "exercise drilling." After covering the subject matter with appropriate examples I often query the student about it from several perspectives to verify understanding. I emphasize understanding the process more than arriving at the "right answer," since a process well understood and followed will inevitably yield the correct answer. At that point the student is ready to apply the knowledge themselves via exercises or homework assignment. When the student achieves satisfactory understanding in advance, the extent of reinforcement needed via independent exercise is often less than what is required in generic classroom environments. Whenever possible I introduce real world applications to demonstrate the practical worth of mastering the concepts and subject matter.

I take personal interest in the progress of each student and will move with deliberation to a new topic rather than belabor a topic that has been satisfactorily mastered. When they make errors I am always clear that the fault is not due to any inherent defect on their part but rather on misunderstanding, carelessness or other factors that contribute to error. I never condemn or demean a student. Rather, I frequently applaud their correct understanding and encourage them to exercise and extend their knowledge without fear of failure.

I offer broad expertise, dedication, quality teaching, efficient use of tutoring time and honest assessment. If these are what you seek in a tutor it would be my privilege and delight to work with you and see you progress to high levels of accomplishment.

SAT Math,

SAT Math

Scoring high on the SAT Math exam requires subject matter expertise (algebra and geometry), application of common sense (estimating skills) and test taking skill. My approach to SAT tutoring focuses on all of these. Where I see weakness in these areas I spend the effort and time necessary in teaching to build up knowledge and confidence. I carefully select appropriate exercises for the student to complete to consolidate understanding and to achieve mastery of the skill. Then, through interactive review of their work, students receive immediate feedback and assessment of their abilities resulting in bolstered confidence.

Mechanical Engineering

In the capacities of project manager, project engineer, operating engineer and sales engineer I have applied my engineering expertise in a broad range of disciplines. Among these are design of fluid power systems for manufacturing and material handling; analysis of ship structures; fabrication of metal structures and high temperature exhaust components; propulsion plant operation; application of advanced materials and technologies in marine environments. I have a consuming interest in heat power systems and energy conversion techniques that can be implemented practically.

Excellent tutor

John has worked with my daughter since last fall and has helped her succeed in her challenging Adv. Chem. course. He has charted her success with his indepth preparation, comprehensive and easy to understand review of all the materials, while focusing on my daughter's learning style and abilities. Her confidence has soared and so have her grades!

An effective and organized tutor who is very much concerned with, and focused on, an individual's academic success.

John A. is a tutor who, as mentioned in the review title, truly desires to help one succeed in their potential trouble subject. John arrives to tutoring sessions well prepared, as he spends time preparing for a tutoring session by reviewing the specific study material on his own before sessions. He uses textbooks of his own and internet resources to further reinforce the subject matter being taught. If there happens, for example, to be a homework, or an in-class, problem that he may not entirely understand himself (a seldom occurrence), then he will acknowledge so. Afterward, he will then spend some time either working out the problem on his own, or researching it (depending on the nature of the problem), and will get back in touch with you with an answer. John is very good about keeping appointments/meeting times, if he cannot make a scheduled appointment, then he is either sick or injured (literally); he WILL NOT "flake" on you. This I know, I have had him tutor me on different subjects for over a year; tutoring I consider to be well worth while. Further, he makes himself available by both phone and internet, not to just set-up another meeting, but to give some last minute help with some trouble problems, concepts, etc. John is a dedicated, sincere tutor, and if you are truly in need of tutoring, in the areas in which he provides tutoring, then you will not be let down nor misled with him as a tutor.
