About Lauren

Teaching is my gift, and I have found that connecting and engaging my students is the first step in their mastery of material, concepts and problem solving. I have a BA in Social Science, with a concentration in Elementary Education. I worked for 10 years as a substitute teacher, which exposed me to many teaching methods and allowed me to draw from the most successful examples to develop my own style. I am also a certified Behavioral Heath Professional, with years of experience working with children with special needs, or behavior challenges. The combined experiences give me a unique ability to draft lesson plans that are individually suited, whatever the challenges presented.

My goals, as a tutor, include equipping each child with the tools necessary to succeed in the classroom environment and instilling a love for learning that will help them overcome any future obstacles they may face. In addition, a strong understanding of grade level required curriculum is the basis on which all lessons are planned.

I offer a free consultation with parents and child, when an understanding of goals will be defined and the process can start that leads the child to his or her full potential!

I look forward to hearing from you and partnering in your child's future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Behavioral Health Professional, certified in the State of Maine. I have 10 years of experience working one-on-one with children with learning challenges, including ADD/ADHD, Asperger's, and Autism. I have many hours of experience as a substitute teacher in Special Education Classrooms. I understand the challenges these students face, and adapt my teaching methods to their individual strengths and challenges.

Aspergers

I have had many successes working with children with Aspergers. As a substitute teacher in the Special Education program at MSAD #60, I often worked one on one with children and found many techniques to engage, and focus them on the subject matter.

Additionally, as Behavior Health Professional, I have 8 years working with children in their homes and community, teaching life skills, coping mechanisms and modifying inappropriate or unsafe behaviors. Each child deserves to have every opportunity to succeed. My goal is to give them the tools to do this.

Autism

I am a Behavioral Health Professional, certified in the State of Maine. I have 10 years experience working one on one with children with Autism. These children have ranged form 4-18 years old, and have been on a wide range of the spectrum, from non-verbal to high functioning. Additionally, I have many hours of experience as a substitute teacher in Special Education Classrooms and I am familiar with the curriculum and have the ability to adapt my teaching methods for each individual's strengths and challenges.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BA in Social Science, with a concentration in Elementary Education. I also have training and am a certified Behavioral Health Professional, and have worked with children with learning or behavioral challenges for the past 10 years.
Additionally, I was a substitute teacher for 10 years, and worked in a variety of classroom and one-on one situations, learning to adapt my style to meet the needs of the students.
I have had many successes, and my greatest achievements are when my students grasp a concept and have the tools and confidence needed to move ahead.
