About Marlene

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in Linguistics and Anthropology (High Honors) and have been involved in education ever since, both as a lifelong learner and as a teacher. I also earned a Ph.D. in Medical Genetics and have taught biology and genetics at all levels from middle school through medical school.

More recently I completed my CIEE-TEFL certification and enjoy teaching English as a second language, particularly to adults who wish to improve their language skills for professional reasons. With my extensive background in genetics and non-profit management, I am particularly well qualified to offer specialized tutoring in medical and business English.

You will find that I am a very conscientious, caring, and curious person. These three qualities greatly influence my tutoring style and my approach to instruction. Being conscientious to me means working hard, staying organized, and taking my responsibilities seriously. In addition, I am naturally a good listener and observer, skills that make me a caring instructor who is very empathetic to students’ needs. I have a great deal of personal experience being an adult learner, so I show a lot of patience with my students and always try to be encouraging and positive. I enjoy incorporating novel approaches to lessons and aim for tutoring sessions that are both enriching and interactive.

I am available for tutoring both online and in person (within 10 miles of my home). My schedule is very flexible, so please contact me to arrange a lesson time to suit your needs. Please note that I do request a 24-hour notice of cancellation as a courtesy both to me and to my other students.

I look forward to hearing from you soon and getting started with you on a journey of learning and success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I received a Ph.D. in Medical Genetics from Indiana University and have taught/tutored genetics and biology at all levels from middle school through medical school. I am currently the director of the Center for Human Genetics in Bar Harbor, ME and have given many presentations and guest lectures on topics such as genetic counseling and medical genetics, both to the general public and to audiences with special interests in this area. I also designed an adult education course on how to construct and utilize a family medical history for healthcare purposes.
