About Melissa

Hello,

I am Melissa, and I would be a great match for any student, especially struggling learners.

I graduated from Lesley University with a 4.0 GPA and a Masters in Special Education. My undergraduate degree is in Human Biology; I worked for some time as a Junior Research Scientist. I am currently employed as a Special Education Science Teacher and Tutor at a Vocational High School. I also completed a CAGS in Behavioral Therapy and work as an ABA Therapist.

I have previous experience in tutoring students who were home on medical leave. I have had the opportunity to tutor everything from Automotive Technology to Physics! I also have experience with preparing students for MCAS, GED and the SAT.

If your student needs support in more than one area, I am the tutor for you! I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have an MS in Special Education. I am a Special Education teacher at Whittier Vocational Technical High School. I teach Learning Center science classes which are self contained small group classrooms. I also work one period as the inclusion teacher in Anatomy and Physiology. I have experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD in both the self contained and inclusion settings. Part of my job is to develop accommodations to support students in being successful in the least restricted environment.

Aspergers

I have an MS Special Education. I have worked for 8 years as a special education teacher. I have worked in both the self contained and inclusion settings with students with Asperger's. I am also studying to become BCBA certification to better serve the students with Asperger's in my school.

Autism

I have an MS Special Education. I have worked for 8 years as a special education teacher. I have worked in both the self contained and inclusion settings with students with autism. As part of the special education team, I help develop Behavior Intervention Plans to support students to be successful in school and at home.

Career Development

I worked as an Employment Specialist in an alternative program. I administered interest inventories and placed students in internships to build work experience. I then supported them in obtaining and maintaining paid employment. On Fridays, I taught a career development curriculum which included; the job search process, resume writing, employability skills, people skills, interview skills, self advocacy skills and personal hygiene.

Regents

I taught at an alternative program for four years in upstate NY. I helped prepare students for the regents exams in math, biology, chemistry and Spanish. I also helped prepare students to take the GED.
