Are you looking for an experienced teacher to tutor your son or daughter? Maybe someone who has kids of their own and understands the concerns a parent has when a child isn't reaching his or her full academic potential? Or someone who has experience with children with some type of learning challenge?
I earned my teaching credentials (along with my Master's degree) at the University of North Carolina back in 1989. I have been previously certified in North Carolina and Virginia, and am now a Maryland certified teacher. I was a classroom teacher for 12 years in Northern VA and currently substitute teach at an area high school in Frederick, MD. I have also privately tutored students wanting help in the math portions of the SAT and ACT. I have two children of my own, including one getting ready to head off to college and one in middle school. Both have been blessed with what is known in the education field as "dual exceptionalities," meaning they are gifted and have either a learning or emotional disability. I know there are many ways to reach a child and am willing to find the methods that work to help your child be successful. Are you looking for an experienced teacher to tutor your son or daughter? In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to being a certified teacher since 1989, I have two children of my own whom I have tutored through all their math classes. I understand how scary math can be at times for children, and how they can shut down. I have experience working with children with ADD/ADHD as well as generalized anxiety disorders. I enjoy helping children see the "fun" in math!
I have been a certified teacher since 1989, where my original certification qualified me to teach all high school level sciences taught in North Carolina. Since then, I have also been a certified science teacher in Virginia and Maryland. I have been a "guest teacher" in my son's elementary school, covering such topics as rocks and minerals. My science tutoring students gain insight from the examples and hands-on materials I provide to help them master their subjects.
Prealgebra is the minimum level of math required to understand the types of problems a student may encounter in any of the high school science courses and I have been certified to teach it since 1989. I therefore have years of experience in tutoring my science students in math so that they can perform well in my science classes. I have also tutored my own children in this level of mathematics, as well as privately tutored higher levels of mathematics, such as algebra and the math seen on the two most common national college admissions exams.
