About Katherine

I am so excited about the opportunity to tutor! I've taken a 60-hour course in tutoring for dyslexia and have had actual tutoring experience in this specific area. However, I am also open to so many other areas of tutoring. I love English, grammar, literature, reading, writing, psychology, computers, and music (piano and guitar); I can also work with math, science, and history--I may just have to do some brushing up; but I'm up for whatever brushing up I need to do to be of help! I'd also be excited about helping with test prep (SAT, GED, etc.). Anything I haven't mentioned, just ask me about, because there's a good chance we could work something out.

I was home-schooled for most of my younger years--learning self-motivation, discipline, and how to figure things out on my own. I then received a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Human Services from Liberty University. I was a graduate assistant through graduate school--grading papers and other assignments for the Psychology Internship class. I also spent a year in China, teaching at a pre-school there and studying Chinese on the side; as well as a year in Ireland, working with adults who have Dyslexia, teaching reading and writing. I believe all of these experiences will be beneficial in making for a great tutoring experience together. If you have any questions, please ask! I'd love to talk with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I lived in China for the past year teaching at a pre-school in Beijing. I took Chinese classes on the side, although I definitely do not speak the language fluently. I learned the basics of Chinese--tones, pronunciation, and beginning vocabulary and sentence structures. As I mentioned, I am by no means fluent, but I believe I could offer some very basic, beginner courses if you are interested.

Dyslexia

Completed Fran Bowman's 60-hour Orton-Gillingham course in MD through Bowman Educational Services, Inc. Received certificate.

English

I wasn't an English major, but my college English professor told me I should be one. I had a great English teacher in high school who really helped me love the subject and get a good handle on English in general. If you need help in this area, I would enjoy working with the subject again!

General Computer

I've grown up using computers and have enjoyed working with them and figuring out new, fun ways to use them for neat projects. Through this exploration, I have become pretty comfortable with the different programs and love teaching others what I've learned!

Grammar

So I have never wanted to be 'that person' who is always correcting someone's grammar, but I am always doing it in my head. While working on my Masters at Liberty, I was a graduate assistant and graded papers for Psychology students. During this time, my obsessive compulsive grammar skills were honed, :) and I do just enjoy grammar in general.

Guitar

I play guitar and can offer beginner guitar lessons, including chords, strum patterns, and timing.

Microsoft Word

I submit that high school, college, and graduate school are a perfect resume alone for Microsoft Word. Word is the program used for almost all papers, of which I have written my fair share. Learning the ins and outs of this program are necessary for convenience's sake if you are going to do any amount of schooling.

Phonics

I took a 60-hour course in Orton Gillingham, specializing in teaching people with dyslexia. A huge part of this involves Phonics, so it is one of my specialties. No matter what age, gaining a good grasp on Phonics is crucial.

Piano

I started piano lessons at home as a child under my mom, then studied under two different teachers going into my teenage years. In high school, I played the piano for my church, and continued to do so with another church during college. I now only play for enjoyment, but I absolutely love the instrument and receive so much joy just playing by myself. I learned to read music in my lessons, but moved more into playing chords/playing by ear with the churches.

Proofreading

I was a graduate assistant for 2 years while getting my Masters in Human Services. During this time, I helped oversee the Psychology Internship class--which included grading the 10-page internship paper. I graded hundreds of college papers during this time, so proofreading is my specialty! :)

Psychology

I was a Psychology major at Liberty University for undergrad, and continued in the Psychology field in graduate school, studying Human Services: Marriage & Family Counseling. My educational background in Psychology offers me the skills to help you in this subject.

Reading

Reading was always my favorite subject growing up, and I still love reading a good book when I have the time. The 60-hour Orton Gillingham course I took focused largely on reading, and the tutoring I have done offers some of the most experience in reading.
